How do you guys put a tank in the back of a pickup truck to get them refilled.  I can't lift them.  Tired of getting help to do this.Nothing But The Truth!!
Reply:I take the tank on a hand truck out to the tail gate. Push the tank over onto the tail gate, and then slide it on in the bed. Use a ratchet strap to secure the tank. I only pick the tanks up to set them in the bottle rack on the back of the cart.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:When you get old enough you FINALLY learn to use your head instead of your back, LOL!! And I also only haul them in my little Nissan 2WD p/u 'cause it's a lot closer to the ground than my Chevy.                                                MikeLast edited by mla2ofus; 04-27-2015 at 09:02 PM.Ol' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I'm getting old, lifting one isn't something I want an audience anymore. I welded a chain to a screw on valve protector cap. I use a tractor loader, but you could use a chain falls, come along, etc from the ceiling or a tree, or an engine crane. You can buy a boom with boat winch to fit your receiver hitch. Once lifted, it swivels. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:i have always let them rest on the tail-gate and slid them in.i like to turn them around sometimes and then it gets tricky as the left knee gets involved.the more comfortable you get with it, the lighter they becomebosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Same way I move large boulders. Heave it up onto my shoulder, climb the side ladder on the flatbed truck and chain it to the headrack. Yeah right. I use a sling w/hooks into the cap and the skid steer to set them into a rack, or onto the rack of the welder. I usually get help at the welding store after backing to their dock.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:I'm only 44, so I can still lift them - but when I get older I'll likely use a choker sling like this one (and my tractor). The strap has little grippys on it.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:When rigging with a strap, lay tank flat, slip nylon sling loop end over cap, then make a half hitch around bottle and set other loop end on hook. The 125 / 150 are not too bad, it's those 300 that suck.

Reply:Just my 2 cents here but some of my caps threads are kind of rounded off a little and are loose fits at best, so be cautious if using them as the sole lifting point.  Best regards Bob

Reply:I use to pick those stupid acetylene tanks up and oxygen... throw it on my shoulder and walk across a platform with it and up stairs or down. Honestly wish I never did it. What am I thinking I picked one up last year to go to the next floor on a platform  look don't be a dumby just don't pick it up yourself. Majority of the time we put the loop end around cap and put 2 half hitches on the cylinder with a 20 ft strap and use the crane (This means the tank will be lifted upside down). But if the crane cant get it where we need its time to hump it.

Reply:Not to change the subject of a thread, but figured I should ask on an active thread loosely related to this. I'm picking up my first tank this weekend, and am wondering if it's safe to lift and put an argon/co2 tank horizontal in a truck bed and strap it in, or do I need to transport it vertically?
Reply:you can transport horizontally safely. people do it all the time. Just don't immediately take it out of the truck, hook the regulator and hoses up and turn it on. Let everything settle from the move. Gas can have moisture/condensation inside the tank that can shoot into your lines.

Nick would jump up on the welding table and with one hand grab a 250 bottle of oxygen by the cap and pick it up! Pound for pound the strongest man I ever seen in my life. Reply:Originally Posted by A_DAB_will_doHere's a practical example of why.  I watched a fellow I know and like grab a tall cylinder by the cap with both hands to lift it onto a bottle cart.  His posture was good and lifting technique was proper...right up to the point the cap pulled off the threads and he punched himself in the mouth with the top of the cap.  The cylinder dropped an inch or two, no problem.  But he was pulling with enough force to lift the bottle off the ground with both hands...  I think he damn near passed out, and he's lucky it didn't cost him any teeth.
Reply:why don't you guys buy an old gas distributors truck and it already has the specialty lift built in... Reply:''Is that the crazy over priced boa-grip? I thought about buying one but I just couldn't swallow the $189.95 for a nylon sling. http://www.safeshop.com/I normally load the tanks into the man basket and then load the basket on the truck with the forklift. I can't man handle tanks anymore.''I use a standard nylon sling. With cylinder upright , I choke it at the bottom and make a half hitch up a little bit and it works fine. This is for short lifts.
Reply:One guy I know uses a hay bale hook for pulling bottles around and into his truck. He puts it through the hole in the cap and away he goes.  I believe it was Farmersamm who has a  bottle cart he built to load up cylinders easier. It had kick out legs so he could lean the bottles over and it would stay self supported. Maybe the 2 ways together will work for you. Another guy showed me how to go to one knee and lay the bottle over my leg and use leverage to help get it up in the air. Sometimes its all a guy needs to do to get them up into a cart or up a couple feet in the air.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:Please nobody use a bale hay hook to hook the cap of a bottle and drag It into the back of a truck PLEASE DONT!!

Reply:I didn't say it was a good idea! lol. I went back and read the first page and after seeing the caps getting pulled off its a BAD idea, SORRY!Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:If I would have spliced the eye bigger on this rope choker, I could just slip the eye over the cap, instead of chocking the cap. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:That is EXACTLY how I move bottles around offshore for Divers oxygen. Now Generally we have all our oxygen and acetylene in a bottle rack. But if you have to take it out of the larger rack and go mobile by grabbing one oxygen and one acetylene to put into a smaller rack. We will take them out, lay them down, put the eye on the cap and double half hitch the tank just like so. Hoist it up with the crane and put it on the barge to put into the small bottle rack where its secured. And this is actually the proper way to transport these bottles. I was skeptical at first myself. After talking to the divers, and two safety reps then convinced me that it is the safest way to transport a single bottle with a crane or hoist. There is no way for that eye to slip off the cap head, nor will the two half hitches come apart.Last edited by AndrewDavenport89; 04-28-2015 at 03:28 PM.

Reply:Never thought this thread would go this far this fast.  I have to say I like the rope idea the best.  Maybe I need to make a cradle that can hole a few tanks to load in the back of my truck with my forklift.  Those people with the Attollolift sure do love there lift clamp.  It would be nice if it would fit all cylinder sizes.Nothing But The Truth!!
