I am building myself a Santa Maria BBQ and need to get 2 wheels (would get wagon wheels but cant find them anywhere...)What is the wheel in this picture called?  And does anyone know where I can buy a couple of them?I even thought about replacement steering wheels for tractors, but cant figure out if these are steel or have rubber over themIt will be going onto a piece of 1/2" black pipe used to raise and lower the grilling surface.
Reply:The wheel would just be called a "hand wheel"....but if you buy the roller that it is attached to in the picture then you can make your own with it. That tube roller is what is used to build large radius pieces like wheels and such.On sale and with a coupon that roller can be bought at Harbor Freight for about 120-150 bucks.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:It's on sale right now for $159.99http://www.harborfreight.com/tubing-roller-99736.htmlhttp://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:ironically if you had a tubing roller you could make a couple LOLHH187Hobart 500i plasma cutterClark 4.5" GrinderDewalt 14" chop saw30 gallom 1.6 hp compressor10 gallon pressure pot sand blasterlots of hand tools
Reply:Thanks ZTFab and kenklingerman.  I have tried searching for hand wheels before and all I seem to some up with are the small diameter ones that are used on mills/lathes etc that only end up being about 4-6".I have contemplated buying the tubing or ring roller, but I dont think I would ever get my moneys worth out of it.  Since this is sort of just a 1 off project, so I think I would rather just buy one.  Does HF sell replacment parts? Maybe I could just buy 2 of the large hand wheels if they do.
Reply:It can't hurt to try.  Send an email to [email protected] .The part is called the 'turning wheel' (part #2, in the manual) for Tubing Roller model 99736.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:How about a sailboat sterring wheel - has more spokes but is of the size you want.  Check the on-line marine suppliers.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:I needed a custom sized valve hand wheel for a job I was on a while back, here's a link to the company that was able to help us out Maybe they can help you as well  http://www.handwheels.comI am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
Reply:I thought I updated my location some time ago, but apparently I forgot! HAHA oops. Should be fixed now. Thanks Dabar  I will have to send them an email if HF doesnt sell replacement wheels.Jack, thanks for the info.  I just emailed them so I will let you guys know what I find out!Rick, I was thinking about that some time ago.  The only problem I have is that I would either have to find one with a conversion to 1/2" npt or try to weld it on.  I only have a 225A AC buzz box and no experience welding dissimilar metals, so I dont even know if I would be able to do it.  With my luck I would probably need some sort of silent beam welding technique to attach it! HAHAIf I could find someone willing to make one for me I would be more than willing to reimburse them for the materials and time spent.  (how much would it cost to have one made?)Guess at this point it sort of hinges on if I can get the HF one.
Reply:In the sailing world, the closest thing is a destroyer wheel.  An 18" (a tiny wheel as these things go) lists for $385 on Edson's site (the manufacturer).http://www.edsonmarine.com/marinesto...ndex&cPath=153
Reply:Here is a magnificent selction of sailing-type, stainless-steel, steering wheels - about $56 - $90 US.You should be able to find a local or semi-local marine chandlery near you to buy from. All these wheels seem to have a 3/4 inch taper - whatever that is.I'm thinking an adaptor may be all you would need. Then just imagine all the oooh & aahhs you and your Santa Maria BBQ will receive!Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:Thanks for the info Tkanzler and Rick!ZTFab,  I will go out and measure tomorrow morning but off the top of my head I am thinking around 22" to 24" diameter.  Tubing size, 3/4" or 1" would be fine.I just got an email back from HF and they only want $11 but the problem is they say it ships from the manufacturer in china, so it would be a 6-8 week lead time plus whatever shipping it is.  By that time it will be Nov and I am not sure how much grilling I will be doing! HAHA.  Thanks again Jack for all the info on that part and the email address, that was very useful.  Here is a sketch of what it will look like when it is done.  However the dimensions have change since the sheet metal came in 5' widths so I bumped up the length of the grill to 5'x32".  A little big for home use... but oh well... you can never have too much room to cook meat over a fire!I will take a picture tomorrow so you guys can see where I am at with it.
Reply:For $11 each, I'd probably just order them and wait the little bit of time for them to get shipped. You're in San Diego fer chriss-sakes.  It's not like you're in Minnesota or Alaska or Montreal.  You can still grill in November in San Diego.  Heck, if you took a piece of electrical conduit you could probably get someone with a conduit bender to 'bump' roll it into a pretty close approximation of a circle.  Then a little welding, some spokes, some more welding, a hub, and some more welding and you would be done.  Or you could just wrap some appropriate dimension of solid or hollow rod/pipe/tube/bar around a circular form of the approximate size.  Heat from a torch or cheater bars may be needed depending on the size and 'strength' of the selected material.  Then, you have the welding and spokes and hub and more welding to do.That $11 price doesn't look all that bad after all.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:Paul there is no way that the roller in the picture is yours. It looks....um....used!! http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:You cold always buy the HF roller and roll yer own, then sell it after to get some of yer money back.  Or.... there must be a local fab shop around you that could do it. Maybe even a muffler shop( might be cheaper than a fab shop)Or... talk to the folks at your local welding supply shop. They may know a guy that can do it.Good luck.Bert200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:it aint hard to get aome 1/2" hot rolled rod and hand-bend it, and some 3/8 for the spokes...weldopresto and shes done...a 6' piece of roundstock will roll into a handwheel just under 2 foot in diameter..
Reply:Well, one approach might be to 'test' the machine twice, and then decide it's just not right for you.100% Satisfaction GuaranteeIf, for any reason, you are not satisfied with any item purchased from Harbor Freight Tools, you may return the product within 30 days for a full refund or replacement, whichever you prefer.
