Needed to weld 1.5mm rectangular tubing. Stick machine only using 6011 3/32 rods vertical down. Can I use 6011 on electrode negative? I've tried 6013 vertical down but I'm having trouble with the slag overtaking the arc. So was thinking maybe I vould use 6011 for it's fast freeze capability and use it in DCEN so as not to blow thru the material. Is it advisable to do this? On another question.I'm looking to get another welder. New Thunderbolt XL ac/dc or used Dialarc 250 ac/dc. It would be replacing my ancient AC welder that stolen a couple of days ago. I've read a lot of threads about both machines and I'm leaning towards the dialarc. My question is about electrical consumption of both machines. Say both are machine are running 1/8 7018 125Amps at the same time. Stand-by and arc time are the same. Assume that they are running side by side in a comparison test. Would the Dialarc consume more electricity than the Thunderbolt?
Reply:The Dialarc is a superior machine to the Thunderbolt. You can try 6011 on straight polarity. It's not going to blow up in your face. I would guess the Dialarc might use slightly more power, if any more at all, for the same setting. Another option is an Inverter from Everlast. CEP sure likes his and says they're the best arc for the money!
Reply:We dont have a dealer for Everlast welders here. Only Millers and Esab as far as I know have local support. Plus I'm looking at a transformer machine for durability. The AC transformer machine that was stolen is older than me and it still runs good, and I'm 34.
Reply:I agree with Dave, the Dialarc 250 is a better machine in all respects. Reply:The dial arc is an industrial class machine versus the hobby class machine Thunderbolt. Your going to require a higher amp 230v feed to power the dial arc however.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Yes the dialarc is an industrial duty machine. Plus it runs 230volts single phase which is normal power supply at home and at the garage/shop. That's why I 'm leaning towards it even used machine vs a brand new thunderbolt. My concern is how it would affect the electricity bill. I'm sure there's a formula for computing this, but my search-fu skill is lacking as I haven't found it yet. So I thought I'd ask you guys😀😀
Reply:Dialarc hands down - I like them I doubt it would use more power at 125 amps side-by-side to the other one.Even if it did, it would be too small a difference to care in my opinion.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I've also tried the 6011 DCEN. Seems to me that I got a more violent arc compared to DCEP. Can any one enlighten me on this? Also where can I find arcshots videos on running 6010/6011 vertical down. So I could compare the puddle to what I am seeing when I am doing it.
Reply:if i'm not mistaken the cellulose potassium coated 6011 is a ac version of the cellulose sodium 6010. it will work on straight polarity although with less penetration and a higher electrode melt off rate.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:.....a higher electrode melt off rate. Thanks docwelder! You've hit it right in the head! As I was playing with 6011 DCEN I put my head next to a test plate and tried to look into the rod as it burned. Very violent and erratic arc! Weld puddle was very difficcult to control and all over the place. Got a lot of spatter in my clear lens cover, almost cooked it and had to get a new one but i was curious and wanted to learn.Last edited by silvertina; 05-03-2015 at 11:23 AM.
Reply:It probably would be more of a violent arc on DCEN just like 6010 is but still should have lower penetration.
Reply:yes with your DCEN i think it gives the weld more heat. plus i would either do DCEP or AC for the 6011 depending on the manufacturer.VictorPraxairAir LiquideMillerLincoln Electric
Reply:I would expect the Dialarc to be slightly less power-efficient than the Thunderbolt, though with better welding characteristics. As for energy consumption and cost, depends on your electricity rates and the amount of time you use it. In my area, the extra cost per hour of arc time is insignificant."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
