Cylinder Exchange

I have a 150 cf oxygen cylinder that says Union Carbide and Linde on the collar.I this a customer owned bottle? Will i be able to exhange this bottle without any issues?Miller Dialarc 250 AC/DCWeldcraft A-150VSmith O/P
Reply:That depends on the place you take it. However it being 150cf there's a good chance they'll consider it a owner bottle. Reply:Hmmm...I though Linde bottles could not be privately owned.I had a heck of a time exchanging my bottle that was purchased from a private party. After a lecture, some back-and-forth, and a few sighs, the guy finally swapped it out for a customer-owned. Reply:The sticker saying Praxair is the biggest red flag!Call them and ask them first and if they sell or have sold that size of cylinder.  Customer owned usually have either no name at all on the neck, COP or the name of the independent supplier who sold it. Praxair may sell that size but if you just bought this cylinder off someone or found it or whatever and don't have any way to prove it was originally a customer purchased cylinder, you're likely out of luck. I know a place that leases and sells cylinders and don't require you set up an account. This is a dumb policy because they can't keep track of who purchased cylinders. If you found one of their cylinders or got one that was a lease, stole one, etc. and took it in to exchange, they couldn't say no because they never kept track of the thousands of cylinders they've sold. The guy built his business by being the only place to sell and exchange any size cylinders. Some companies still prefer to lease but all the cylinders come out of the same pool. You walk in with one of their cylinders and they'll exchange it no questions asked. He's too busy counting his money to realize how much he's losing. I think Praxair would keep better track of their cylinders and want some kind of proof the cylinder is in fact a customer owned cylinder.Last edited by Welder Dave; 04-25-2015 at 12:59 PM.
Reply:Again it depends. I'm a Praxair drop dealer here. Current local policy is that 150cuft and smaller are considered possible owner cylinders and can be exchanged. However a few years back when I first started they wanted proof of ownership for anything larger than a 80cuft.   Just about every company out there has Linde bottles. Reply:Exchanged the cylinder at Airgas today with no problem. They didnt even make me pay for a test.
