I bought a 7000 running watt generator to run my welder off of. I have a 4 prong twist lock 240 volt on the generator. The do I need to make it plug my welder? I have a longevity stick weld 140. Just trying to see what I need?
Reply:does your stick weld 140 use a nema 6-50 male plug?  If so just buy the female receptacle from Cooper Wiring, and a male 4-prong L14-30 connector and wire it up if you're willing to take your own risks. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:longevity 140 has a 6-50p.....You need a female 6-50r, and a male 4 prong twist lock.and a length of cord.Hook them together.I'm sure you can find wiring diagrams online.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Reply:Alright so I need a 6-50r and a l14-30p. What wire do I buy for the green or do I buy 2 pole and ground?

Reply:Okay gotcha
Reply:Bistineau why 8-4 for the cable? Since the 6-50 has only 3 blades, 2 hot and ground, he should only need 3 wire cable. The 4th would be useless at the outlet anyways. I'd agree with 8-4 if he was attaching to a 4 prong outlet like those for newer ranges or dryers, but for this application you don't need a wire for neutral..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I was going by the diagram of the plug provided by Oscar in post #2. Wasn't considering the # of contacts for the 6-50. So the 8-3 wire would be suitable in this case. I was still on my first cup of coffee when I responded earlier this morning.
Reply:So I need say 25ft 8-3 wire, 6-50r and a l14-30p. Wire it up to the diagram above and away I go? Does a 8-3 wire have 2 black wires and a ground?
Reply:It's likely you will find it with a black, red and white. But the color of the insulation is irrelevant, as long as the conductors are connected to the correct terminals.Last edited by Bistineau; 12-08-2014 at 09:53 PM.

Reply:This the right wiring for it?

Reply:There isn't any point in using 8 gauge on a short run of wire. That L14-30R on the generator is going to be on a 30 amp breaker, making 8 gauge kind of pointless.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder

Reply:On a portable generator it is always a good idea to run a ground from the generator frame to the frame of the unit you are powering, (ie welder). This is in addition to the ground provided by the usual green wire as in a three wire setup.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:If you have a 240 volt generator its ground and neutral are bonded to the frame already. The "ground screw" on the side of the generator is for an actual earth ground to aid in snuffing any RFI the gen set might be putting off.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:You very well may be correct but I have to go by manufacturer's guidelines and seldom work with anything below 30kw which are permanent installs. However both of my Onan sets state in the manuals to attach an external wire tying the generator set to the appliance if a remote, or portable operation.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
