Found a Hobart CyberTIG, and have NO clue if this is worth anything. Never heard anything about them. Good machines? Energy hogs? Worth it to source parts for and get running? I DON'T KNOW IF IT RUNS, but will call and ask when I have the money. They're asking $200, so I'm skeptical about it running. If it doesn't run, would it be worth the money to try and get it fixed?EDIT: If anyone can tell more info about it, that'd be awesome too. Can't see much in the pic, but I'm assuming it's the 300A?"I fully know my place in life, and it's behind a welding helmet...." - Jesse JamesIG: @weldakota

Reply:In the 1970's I got sent back to welding school to learn how to Tig weld stainless steel pipe. I do remember they were nice machines. Just wonder if they might be 3-phase.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:They built them up to mid-80's, the AC/DC machine is single phase 100amp@230volt input & I can't remember the duty cycle. The DC only machines were 3 phase & 100% duty cycle. That one has the 120 series panel which give you pulse & post flow IIRC.Parts for it would be a bear to find.Good luckMatt
Reply:I'll start with it's single phase. Very Very few AC TIG welders where made 3 phase. It makes no sense for them to be 3 phase since you can only use 1 of the phases for AC unless you get fancy with the electronics like modern inverters do. Now DC only TIG welders could and often are 3phase for the smoother arc. Now for the welder in question. If it works they're a very nice welder. Very smooth arc. That control drawer is slightly less complicated than the one I had (the control panel is actually a drawer that could be swapped out for different options). That one has hot start, pulse, and post flow only. That means it's a little less complicated and less likely to go wrong (there's a bunch of relays behind there that control all of that stuff). There's two serious nearly impossible to find or fix things that can go out on one of those. First is the high frequency transformer, and second is a solid state amperage control board mounted on the control drawer. If they work though it's a nice welder. One word of warning is to not try and run the amps down to low. That's where things get dicey on the solid state amperage control board. That's where I ran into problems on the one I had. I worked at getting it to low amps and ended up blowing the fuse and scr's out on mine. Those can be found and replaced but they're $$$. As long as I didn't try and run low like below 15 amps or so I never had any problems with it and really liked it. It's one of the smoothest stick arcs I've ever run on a single phase transformer shop machine. It was a fine TIG machine as well for standard sine wave TIG. If everything works on it I'd say it's worth $200. I paid $400 for mine many years ago and got a good many years use out of it before upgrading to a Dynasty.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Clean as a whistle.Obsolete & I couldn't give the damn things away. It was foolish thinking I could sell them when I bought them. I ended up seeing a couple hundred for both with a foot control for one!!!Personally, I would save my money for something else. If there's no foot control with it, a replacement will exceed the cost of the welder. Dunno if SSC makes a control for that machine. I wouldn't count on one being cheap either way. If anything at all goes wrong with that thing that isn't simple or mechanical, it's a boat anchor. Irish is prolly the exception to the rule because he can fix damn near anything. IMHO of course |
