Hi,I am new to the site looking for some welding help.I am a novice welder but have done some. I am having some issues with my floor pan spot welds.Basically, I have a Hobby Lincoln 180 Welder that I have wired up for 220v.My floor pan is 18g and my crossmember metal that it lays on shows about 10g maybe 11 on the caliper.Regardless, I have my welder set up for the thicker metal 10g which is E - 8 setting from the chart on the door of the welder.I have the metal clean and weld thru primer. I am trying to hit the center of the hole to start and move the puddle in a circle. When I am done there is always a burnback of the 18g and a section that does not fill with the puddle due to the burnback. Looks like a pie with a piece missing. I cant figure out if I am too hot, not hot enough ? I am holding the puddle for a count of 1000/1 and then trying to rotate the puddle. Sorry for the long question.HELP ?
Reply:You should see a spot about a quarter inch diameter on the hat channel without any burn thru . If that's the case you are getting a good weld. If you have a small crater on top wait a second or 2 and hit it again. How bid of a hole are you using? 5-16 hole works well.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Esab 161lts miniarc.
Reply:I am using 5/16.....Can you explain this term a little more.... You should see a spot about a quarter inch diameter on the hat channel without any burn thru I am not 100% sure what you mean....If i have a small crater.....  I hit the heat to the center of the weld puddle i just created, yes..... am I remelting that area or am I just adding to the edge of it to fill the hole ?thx for the help
Reply:Okay, you have an 18 gauge floorpan, 5-16 hole . You are welding this to a body support roughly 1-8 inch thick, right. On the underside of the support check and see if you have a small circle from the heat. If its painted or primed it will be easy to see. If not grind it clean underneath where the weld would go and check that you are making a heat circle on the back side .Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches.
