Using fire hose as cheap option for cable sleeve for spool gun leads

Saw on CL the local fire department is getting rid of a whole bunch of older fire hose, so I made a donation to the firehouse and got a 50' roll of 2" canvas covered fire hose. I cut the outer shell off of the hose and am going to use it as a cable cover (along with some zip ties) for my 30' leads from the Spoolmatic.  Hoping it protects enough to prevent chafing, but it's better than nothing and cheaper than the actual cover they sell for the spoolmatic..  I need to find those low profile zip ties... does anyone know where i can get them locally?  Ace Maybe? Reply:I was thinking about asking the ole lady to break out the Capitol Sewing Machine... Reply:That covering is actually nylon, not canvas. After cutting it you can run a propane torch along the edge to fuse it together to prevent fraying. Kind of like wrapping a nylon rope with electrical tape, cutting through the tape and burning the ends of the rope to prevent fraying. You may have to experiment with the speed you need to move the torch along the edge to fuse it right, but you have enough to do that with on the left over portion.
