Hello im welding a gate i was wondering what gauge material are people using for the privacy panels im considering 24 gauge sheet on the back any suggestions would be appreciated.
Reply:Is your steel flat or with some formings? I would be afraid of noise from wind or heat expansion, depending how private you want it, small expanded mesh, rattan or fabric can also do nicely, snow and freezing don't seem to be a problem if i'm right. On a sunny day it may transform your private area into an oven
Reply:18ga will work fine. I generally weld some 1/8x1/2 flat bar around the inside perimeter of the gate. Cut you sheet to fit, leaving about an 1/8" gap around the edge. Tack the sheet in about 8" apart. Grind welds flush, then cut more flat bar to cover that. Punch holes every foot or so and plug weld to the sheet. This is a nice edge detail. The trick to making a sheeted gate tolerable, is to caulk the perimeter seam, as well as other contact points of the sheet. It quiets it up nicely, then prime and paint.
Reply:thanks guys 18gauge isnt to thick thought |
