How are these and what do I need to change and work on? My horizontal fillet welds are going well (pics are flat position but they were welded horizontal), but I cannot seem to figure out outside corners. Running .035 flux core wire for now.
Reply:Bead shape on the outside corner doesn't look bad. It would be easier to see cleaned better though. I'd want to see the inside edge though to really tell you how you did. I see a lot of students make the top look good, but they don't break down that inside edge of the plates. I'll take a quick look at a students plate from the top, then flip it over and look for a consistent line inside that shows the broke down the root evenly over the whole length, both sides."Trick" I use doing outside corners is to move nice and even with the gun 90 deg left right to the sides of the plate with just a small amount of gun angle. I do no motion or if I do, it's almost imperceptible, usually to deal with two plates that fit poorly.I see a bit of wander at the edges, but nothing major. I'm splitting hairs with this as I'm some what of a perfectionist. You don't look to be favoring one side or the other, so that's good. Bead from the end looks well centered and even. If you showed me 3 or 4 of these in a row, I'd move you on at the tech school, assuming the back side is good as well. If not, you'd need to slow down some to get the root to break down evenly..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:On your fillet welds, looks to me like you need to slow down, or add more wire. Attached ImagesDont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Ill make sure I run a few more and post some more pictures (inside and out) tomorrow. I happened to run a fillet on the inside of that one....oops !!!Ive been making small cubes to practice the outside corners, and most of those welds have been pretty good. I do feel like I am chasing the weld puddle more than controlling it though.Ill try slowing down on those fillet welds also and see what happensThanks for the help guys!!Last edited by hicktown; 05-07-2015 at 07:34 PM.
