Building a shelf for my air tools Just a step by step here:Started off by laminating together two 1/2"x7.25"x34" American White Oak boards so that I have a 1" thick board. I used Titebond III Ultimate wood glue for this and about 15 clamps to make sure that the boards glued up flat without any air pockets in between. After laminating them together, I ripped 1/8" off of each long side on the tablesaw. This squared up the edges and gave me a board width of 7".Then, ripped 1/2" off of each short side on the miter saw in order to square those up and give me a board length of 33".Then I cut the trim for the board (the trim is 1.25" high in order to give me a small 1/4" lip above the top of the board to keep anything from rolling off). This is three pieces of trim, a long front piece mitered to 45 degrees on both ends and two short pieces mitered to 45 degrees on only one end and cut at 90 degrees on the back (the back of the shelf will be against the wall so I don't need to worry about anything rolling off in that direction):Then I layed out where I am going to drill the holes for the bolts to go through (the bolts will attach air line quick disconnects to the board. The tools will be held in place by connecting them to the quick disconnects. The holes are drilled with a 15/32nds drill bit. I layed my holes out starting with one hole in the center and spacing the holes out from there. The holes are set 2" in from the front edge of the board and are spaced 2.5" apart. This gives me a total of 11 holes:Then I chamfer the backside of the holes to match the bolts I'm using. I like to use a cutting chamfer for this since it gives a good clean chamfer where as a fluted chamfer can leave a rough and chattered edge on the chamfer:After drilling the holes and the chamfers, I started sealing the board with some indoor/outdoor polyurethane sealer. I only seal the back edge and the top and bottom of the board since the sides will need to have the trim glued to them. Since the trim is going to be painted white, it won't get sealed. Reply:Here's the shelf after the trim has been attached. After this, I'll tape off the sealed wood and prime and paint the trim white. In the last picture here you can see the airtool quick disconnects and the bolts that will be used to attach them:moved onto the taping and priming:still more to come..."No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:The shelf is complete and installed. I'm need 4 more bolts to add in the rest of the air tool holders onto it, but it's working wonderfully and keeps my air tools well organized, accessible and out of the way.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Not bad, nice work. The ones I've usually seen done have the tools mounted below the shelf so you can still store things above. Now lets see you do one with all the fancy molding out of steel/ alum instead! D@RN wood workers!  .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:If you oil your air tools often, aren't you gonna have some drippage issues?

Reply:I agree they shouldn't have that much oil, but especially after years of use, mine all have a little seepage.  What I was really talking about was dripping down onto the floor, or whatever is underneath the shelf, not the shelf itself.
Reply:ahh, that's not a problem, they'd be able to leak onto the shelf, but it'd pool there, it has no path to drip down to the floor.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Are the quick-connects not open on the bottom?
Reply:nope, just solid bolts connecting the quick disconnects to the board.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
