I am welding 6061 1/4" to 3/16". I can get a puddle started the as soon as I start working the heat over to the 3/16 it crates a mushrooming effect and turns black. I cleaned all the surfaces with a SS wire brush. 90% of the time I can weld the pieces no problem, it just happens occasionally.Syncrowave 250 set at 225amps, Argon 15 cfh, 1/8" 1.5 Lanthanated, Bal 7.5Any suggestions? Reply:Gas issue..Kink in the hose? What does the tungsten look like?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I agree with Zap, it's more than likely gas, but I was thinking that the aluminum angle may be creating a "wind channel" that is blowing your gas away from the puddle.  Do you have any source of wind that the angle might be channeling?  Your welds on the left in the photo look clean, so I was thinking the hose was probably good.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:I'm in a shop with the doors closed, so no wind. I do agree it looks like a shielding issue, I'm just lost at whats causing it. I've check the hoses and flow meter. Gas is audible from the nozzle.I just tacked another set of angles and not one messed up. Beats me
Reply:Perhaps you have blockage problem. Is the gas port in your torch clear?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Did you lift the torch to puddle the corner of the top piece causing a long arc to the lower piece, which also caused you to be too far away for proper shielding?Just shootin in the dark.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:In this case even though the 3/16" plate is the smaller section it's the larger heat sink for the arc start. I'm gonna start on the plate and roll the tack up to the corner of the 1/4" angle which will try to go away pretty quick.Good LuckMatt
Reply:Tell your helper to get off the gas hose. You might be better to start the weld away from the corner of the angle, because as others have said the corner is oing to go away quickly.Mike
Reply:If it's an intermittent problem, it may be a crack in the gas hose, probably either near the torch or near the machine. If so, holding the torch at a certain angle or tugging on the hose may cause air to be drawn into the hose, contaminating the gas. Check the hose carefully and replace it if it looks suspicious.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
