I've been planning to for over a year...had my neighbor drop off one of his worn out 10 yard dump truck drums...had it sitting in the shop way too long now.Top is 12x18 3/4 hot rolled, bottom plate is about 13x5 3/4 hot rolled, post is 2.5" schedule 40 pipe cleaned off with my hardin pipe finisher.Cutting the bottom piece of plate required me to use the gas axe (as Sam would say).  My plasma (PCM-875) doesn't do a great job on material that thick.  Even though I'm really not practiced at cutting with OA, I can still get a much better cut on material that thick with the torch than the plasma.Welding was done with the trailblazer 302 using 1/8 6013 at about 100amps in AC.  Two passes on every weld.  This is the first time I've stick welded in over a year...so be gentle .And of course, here's the pics:Bottom pipe to plate weld (flat):Top pipe to plate weld (overhead):And here's one of my OA cuts just for giggles:The stand is pretty darn solid...that drum weighs about 150lbs, so I don't think I'll have to worry about it tipping any time soon.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:Sweet....I did mine with 2in pipe and welded a 2in 150 flange on the bottom and bolted it to the concrete floor...mine holds a 10in grinder from the old school....suuuuuppeer smooth running...barely tell its on. It has bushings in the wheels turned from brass for a perfect fit.  I do like how yours can be moved around the shop mine is stationary but its tucked away as not to get dust on the lathe. Now I have to find room for a horizontal surface grinder.....Miller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:Nice and heavy. Looks great. Now you need a bigger grinder.

Reply:I made a vise stand just like it .I backed into it with a forklift and knocked it over, and pulled the castiron away from the brake drum. you might want to install some bolts along with the weld on the mounting the drum.Just a thought
Reply:Nice.  If that drum is solid cast iron, you will do well to drill through the plate you welded to it at a couple of the wheel stud holes and put bolts/nuts through to guard against weld failure (mentioned by mudwizer). If that drum is one of the "centrifuse" type, the area where your plate is welded to it is actually steel (not cast iron) and the weld will hold, no matter what happens.  The rest of a centrifuse drum is made of cast iron, but the mounting flange is made of steel.Looking at the thickness of the drum at the wheel stud holes, it appears that your drum is probably solid cast iron. Centrifuse drums are only about 1/4" thick at that spot and yours looks to be 1/2" thick there. That drum may have felt like 150 Lb but it is actually closer to around 100 Lb if it is centrifuse type. But, if you find that you need more weight, weld up all the openings in the drum at the base of your vertical pipe. Then, stand the whole thing upside down and mix an 80 Lb bag of Kwik-crete and pour it to within a half inch of the wide mouth of the drum.Trying to fill it up completely might result in losing the straight cut edge of the drum to rest on the floor, and that could cause a wobble on an uneven floor. We have made numerous type of stands (where I work) from old centrifuse drums.  With concrete ballast poured in, the ones holding signs on the parking lot stay upright even in howling winds.
Reply:Cast iron as it turns out...I'll break out the magdrill and put some bolts through it.  It is 147lbs actually, I had weighed it when I got it home...I don't think it needs anymore weight as it's heavy enough to move around as it is.  I made the plate so large so that I could mount adjustable rests directly to it. I have been looking for a larger grinder, but I'm a sucker for old tools, so I've been looking specifically for a 10" Van Dorn --Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
