I have a 3m half mask with p-100 2097 filters, and always seem to fog up my safety goggles that are supposed to be fog free, bought at mcmaster-carr. I wear my reading glassed under the goggles, and all under my hood. Is there a better respirator, where exhaled air goes a different direction?Any help is appreciatedThanksRaf
Reply:Doesn't sound like it's sealing well, especially up around your nose. That or it's a goggles problem.I'd start with the basics and see what eliminates problems. Do your goggles fog without the respirator? I ask because I have issues with standard goggles or if I'm sweating heavily with my tight fitting safety glasses. It's just the hot moist air trapped between my face and the safety gear that is causing the issues. It doesn't happen all the time, but under high temps or heavy exertion, I have that issue.I'll also have issues occasionally if my mask doesn't seal well around my nose causing the hot air from my breath to want to vent straight up. In my case it usually means I need to trim my mustache under my nose better. I look a bit odd with it shaved down a bit, but I get a better seal that way. Know how to check and see if a mask is sealing well and remember just because it sealed well before, doesn't mean it's sealing well today. It's certainly possible to have a facial shape that will allow a mask to seal if positioned one way, yet leak badly if positioned slightly different. If might just need the straps readjusted..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:like DSW said, check the respirator fit at the nose and tighten the straps if necessary. I use the same mask and filters with UVEX S3960C safety goggles for metalwork. They rarely fog up and seal around your eyes keeping grinding debris from getting in your eyes at odd angles. i had the fogging issue more often with regular safety glasses.
Reply:There are different 3M half-mask respirators, and they exhaust in different locations.  You told us what filters you're using but didn't tell us which respirator you're using so it's impossible to know whether the problem is the fit or the respirator.  I use the 7500 series which exhausts straight down, and never have fogging inside my shield.  I wear prescription safety glasses with side shields at all times, but never goggles inside the hood.  I have had goggles fog on me when out in the wide open -- very difficult to keep them fog-free inside a shield, I would imagine.I've seen other 3M masks that exhaust straight forward, which will fog up the inside of the shield in no time.
Reply:Sorry, i have the 5000 series of 3m half masks , but wNt to upgrDe to the silicone series. Thanks,Raf
Reply:I use the 6200 with 2097 filters, look similar to the 5000 except reusable. I don't wear the goggles under the welding hood though, only for grinding, wire wheeling etc. You might also try difference sizes if it's not fitting well, although I tried a 6100, the small size and it was way too small. The 6000 series should exhaust straight forward, if they arent fitting properly they will exhaust upward into your goggles.
Reply:Thank you all for helping me out. I adjusted the straps and seems to fit better. I am going to try the 7500 3m in medium, the silicone version and hopefully wont fog up my goggles. Those Uvex goggles sound good. Thanks again,Raf
Reply:I read a lot of safety goggle reviews before buying the uvex because I was sick of my safety glasses fogging up, still getting ocassional flying debris in the corner of my eye and having them get scratched beyond use. I personally like these because they seal off around your eyes and if the lens gets scratched up, it can be replaced independently of the goggles. Plus theyre not expensive. Would definitely recommend them.
Reply:I had the same problems with my North respirator. a clean shave fixed my problem.
Reply:I knew a guy that had an exhaust hose going out and over his shoulders.
