Hey im new to the forum and new to welding.  Looking for my first welder and think i have settled on the Lincoln 140 because of cost.  All the Millermatic's i have seen have been way to expensive.  Looking to be able to weld 1/2in.  Is the Lincoln sufficient enough?  THanks for you help.
Reply:Have you tried looking for used equipment such as on craigslist! There are also some great buys online at the various online welding stores such as weldersource or cyberweld as well as others. Try a google keyword search for Lincoln 140Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:Hey Specter.  Yes i have searched CL in my city, surrounding larger cities, as well as Seattle where i grew up and visit regularly.  Lots of older larger machines out of my price range is what i have run across the last month or so.  I will keep looking.

Reply:I have a lincoln weldpak 155 , it is a 230 volt model similar to the Lincoln 180 models they sell today minus a few bells and whistles.  Anyway it is good for thin sheet metal (like auto body stuff) and I have even used it on heavier stuff up to .25"  thick (like the spring mounts on my racecar's rear end housing) with multiple passes. I think if you are considering using the welder for thicker materials you should spend the extra money and get a 230 volt model.  like the Lincoln 180, Hobart handler 180 or the Millermatic 180.  Any of these can be adapted to a spoolgun, then you can tackle aluminum or switch back and froth from mig to fluxcore easily.A 110 volt welder is ok for thin stuff, nut any thing over .100-.125"  puts you into the 230 volt welder range.Bob
Reply:Ok i am leaning more towards 220 now.  My cousin and i are splitting the cost of the welder so if i can convince him to do it i will start looking for a 220.  What is a good 220 welder in the $500-600 range?
