So the mailbox is getting installed with the pole at a angle, so that's why the pole looks a little funny. The mailbox is actually an entire box welded together with the wood as decorationThe key box is going inside their office! Reply:Originally Posted by wroughtn_harvI would still recommend a breakaway if you can.  If you are doing this for a client and someone gets hurt because it is perceived to be a hazard to a public highway your insurance is going through the roof and you might not even be able to get insurance later.Worst case scenario.  Someone you care about does something stupid like text while driving or swerve to far to miss a dog etc and they hit your pride and joy and someone they love and care about is severely hurt.  Mailboxes are in the public right of way and the laws are to protect the public and not private property. If you like working wood and steel you need to try on some stone and pipe.  This gate is ten years old and still works fine.  If you like the color on the stone, cutting torch does a beautiful patina on sand stone when applied with a loving touch.
Reply:I'm glad you like the gate, check out http://www.harveylacey.com/id56.htm  It is amazing what a little heat can do to a project. What I would do is cut the post at grade level.  Your post is angled but the cut needs to be a level cut.  Weld a 3 X 3 X 1/4" plate on each side and then use two 5/16" bolts diagonally.  The bolts will shear with minimal damage to the mailbox and the vehicle.  I looked for some photos of a water hydrant guard I did for a friend.  It's been hit and the bolts have been sheared a couple of times but it was enough to stop the vehicle before it took out the hydrant..  New bolts and it was good as new.life is good
Reply:great lookin mailbox!  I pity the jackass kids that try and take a swing at that with their bat....
Reply:They look great and sturdy enough. Like the woods you added, makes them more pleasing. Great job!
