Hey I need to get a good ac/dc stick welder any suggestion's. I looked at the idealarc but it is a bit pricey for me at the moment.

Reply:Check out your local newspapers or flyers for auctions there are usually a couple of auctions or garage sales or even ads in the local paper around here with welders for sale.  AC/DC are not as plentiful as the AC ones are but there are some out there for sale from time to time. That is if you don't mind buying a used one, If possible its always a good idea to make sure it works before you buy. The old AC machines are going from $75.00 - $150.00 or more. The AC/DC you might expect to pay $150.00 or more for one.Nothing wrong with a good used machine if it has been treated ok it should last you a long time. My old one is a Forney AC machine I don't have any idea just how old it is but it still works great. I do take the cover off of it once in awhile and blow the dust and crud out of the inside of the case.
Reply:I bought an 1987 lincoln 220 stick for $65 used from my grandpa's friend, it ran just as good as new.My grandfather has the same welder but his is from the late 60's, early 70's, and runs jsut as good as they do new.Check around, look in the paper, tagsales, classified papers.You can usually find one in good shape for real cheap.

Reply:MetalSculptor I notice a theme here with every one of the posts in the Lincoln forum.  You don't like Lincoln...we get that.  First thing: If you dislike Lincoln so much, stay out of the Lincoln forum.  Second: You haven't stated a single well articulated or valid reason for your dislike.  Your above post doesn't clearly show any detail on how or why they shock you if you get wet, therefore it is really impertinent to anyone who hasn't had a frontal labotomy.  I would recommend posting more sensible and helpful responses, or not posting anything at all and just staying out of the threads where you want to bash someone/something/some company/etc...

Reply:for the record winter, AC will shock the crap outta you if you get wet.   This isnt a Lincoln nonly problem though.  Its AC more specially then DC.  DC it can and will happen, but is much more safe. The AC however, tends to be more critical.  A sweaty glove for instance can allow the jump.  The DC is well publized as safer  for wet or damp conditions, cramped conditions, working under in inside of something.  The DC also gives youa  better arc.  HOwever, they say 3/16 and up should be run AC to fight arc wander.  Arc wander is where the arc actually jumps around the puddle and "wanders."  This is due to magnetic fields.  There are a few tricks you do can like wraping the pipe your weldion with the ground, or putting the clamp as close to where you rwelding.  But runnign AC also helps a tremdous amount I am told.  Though I rarely use larger then 5/32.   does this help answer the shock question, or atleast give a good answer for somone who dint know the answer?IF it Catches...Let it Burn

Reply:I just sold a Lincoln AC-225C for $100.  Served me well for many years and hopefully will serve the next guy just as well.That and just about any welder will shock you if you're standing in a puddle...  I'd almost place money on the fact that ANY manual for ANY welder will warn you not to do that very thing as well for that very reason...
Reply:ive welded in the rain, in water...ect.  But AC is more prone, a crappy or worn out pair of boots will make a big differne.  Gloves are the samejust coming from a DC stick weldin contract welder     But I wont deny one bit that you can and do get them bites, but ac you just cant deal with it   good luckIF it Catches...Let it Burn
