I have to drill and tap some holes in 1/8'' thick steel using a 1/4'' bolt. What size tap/bolt should i use. A 1/4-20 or 1/4-28. I was thinking that the 1/4-28 would be better since im going into 1/8'' thick steel and will be using more threads. ThanksShaneYa gotta spend money to make money!

Reply:I've used both...Kinda depends on the applacation. But being that it's such a light weight fixture either should work.Victor O/A SetHF Band SawHomebuilt 16" Abrasive Cutoff SawRed 225 Buzz BoxCraftsman 5hp. 30gal Sears and Robuck LeathDelta 6" Vert. Reply:What about using some self tapping sheet metal screws? For thin material I often use captive nuts. Similar to welding a nut on but you press it into a pre-drilled hole. Very fast and clean.http://www.mcmaster.com/#press-in-captive-nuts/=9waw2uI recently tapped a bunch of #10-24 holes in 1/8" steel. The major diameter is around 3/16" which clearly violates the 1.5 x diameter rule. Worked for my application but I wouldn't do it again. No problems with pullout but I couldn't keep the screws tight.
Reply:I'm with the others on using a nut insert or welding a nut on if you have the room behind the 1/8" material but if not then my choice would be 1/4-28 and use Loktite to give them a fighting chance at staying tight.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
