Whoops,  I accidently draped my tig lead over a fresh weld and it burnt a hole through it. It is only about 1.5' from the torch.  Can this last 1.5' be cut off and repaired somehow, or am I going to need to purchase a new lead?
Reply:Damn pic didn't show up.
Reply:Ha, wtf
Reply:This is likely helpful too I imagine.
Reply:You got nothin' to lose, cut the crimp off, and shorten it. Just buy some crimp ferrules and the tool on eBay, should cost you under $25.
Reply:Im a bit of a spud when it comes to these things but if its possible to cut it and put a new end on would it be possible to cut the dodgy section and add a joiner in? That way your not losing any length?
Reply:It's only a gas tube so throw some electrical tape over it and call it a day.Bet you don't do that again......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:what do you think about some shrinkable tubing?..slip it over the end of the line by the fitting, mabe a few layers? also would you put some sealant on the red covering as it might be pouris and seep gas underneath the tape or shrink tubing?..  Originally Posted by zapsterIt's only a gas tube so throw some electrical tape over it and call it a day.Bet you don't do that again......zap!
Reply:Thanks guys, those all sound like good ideas.  No zap,  learned the hard way. Won't do that again for sure.  I do have some shrink tube and electrical tape.  I think I will try a layer of heat shrink with some silicone caulk under the edges and then back it with electrical tape.  Yes it is a htp torch and lead.  Next time I'm there I'll maybe being it with and see if they can fix it. I think they build a lot of there components themselves.  Thanks guys, this should at least get me up and running for now to continue my smoker build.
Reply:A new power cable isn't expensive, less than $50.You just have to seal this up good enough to not leak gas. Like zap said, tape it up or shrink it up.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I'm a big fan of heat shrink with sealer inside. I keep them on hand in a variety of sizes.
Reply:So far so good.  Silicone caulk, then heat shrink, and 2 layers of electrical tape.  No noticeable leaks yet.  We will see how she does when the lead starts heating up being that is only air cooled and all.
Reply:Why would you caulk it? I hope you didn't put that on the hole or in there.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:No I didn't put it on the hole.  Put a thin layer starting about an inch past the hole on both sides.  I did it to seal up the braided fabric. Other wise I assumed argon would leak out.
Reply:Shoe Goo from walmart. It takes a day to dry but it wont come off and should stick and insulate. Just smear some on all the way around.GizzmoSyncrowave 250 CK aircooled tig
Reply:Its f.u. already, try removing an inch or so of the 'fabric', & seal the hole with shrink with inside sealer, then some shrink over all of it,  ,  ,  ,  then some camo duct tape to hide the oowie!
Reply:Keep in mind that it's not air running through that tube, it's your expensive Argon. You don't want it leaking, even a little bit.I'd do either the crimp or the replace plan.MM210TA186TA95sLincoln AC/DC Tombstonegood old Smith torch setup 24v Readywelder mig w/spoolgunSB H 10 latheBridgeport mill6x12 K.O.Lee surface grinderK.O.Lee tool/cutter grinder

Reply:Still been using the torch as it was repaired the first time.  Yes my htp 221 has a solenoid valve to kick the gas on and off. Welds the same as it did before the incident.  No leaking.  It's wrapped tight. Heat shrink goes about 5 inches each way from the hole with about 4 inches of a light coating of silicone on each end. Then there are 2 layers of good quality Scotch 35 electrical tape that goes about 3 inches past the heat shrink on each end.  I'm confident it will not leak till I make it to htp to get it re crimped.  Just a temporary but functional fix.  Thanks for the replies. Nice to get others opinions as I'm new to tig and just a hobbyist tig welder. Have been using it a ton lately since I'm building a SS smoker.
