Does anyone know anything about a Tig Master Model 9FV-25R  125 amp tig torch?  I understand that it is air cooled.   Is this a poplar torch to buy or do one have a lot of trouble with it.  How about consumables are they available?  Thanks richey
Reply:What machine are you going to be using it on?How thick and what type of material are you planning to weld with it?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Max 3/16. HF-15  high frequency. Airco AC-DC 250 amp Bumblebee. Thanks for your input
Reply:I am not familiar with that brand, but a #9 torch is quite small for that welder. Even on 3/16" metal it will get hot quick. If you don't want to go water-cooled, you will be better off with a 17 or 26 size torch. They are bigger than the 9, though.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Agree. I would go with a 26. You may want the 9 also for when you are welding 1/8" and thinner.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I497 using TapatalkGravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Thanks a lot. I appreciate all your help.  I didn't know how those torches are sized.  Is there somewhere I can view a chart of sizes of fig torches. My welder and hf unit are from the late 70s early 80s era
Reply:I think you will be happier with a #17 torch, the #9 will limit your amperage and the #26 just feels too big and bulky most of the time. I don't know of a chart.#9 and #20 are the same size torch, 9(usually 125-130amps) is air cooled and 20(250 amps) is water cooled. They use the same torch parts. Most of the larger torches use the same size torch parts (larger parts than the #9-20) #17 and #26 are aircooled so take a look at those. If you want a nicer to use torch, get one with a Superflex hose.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Squirmypug than you so much.  I am digging out some stuff my dad  gave me back in he late 70s early 80s and I have forgotten a lot about this stiff. I appreciate you informing me about the torch. Richey
Reply:A  #17 torch is aircooled, rated to 150 amps usually. If you want to use all the power the machine can make a #26 is your only choice unless you get or make a cooling system. A watercooled #20 (the small one) is most often rated for your 250 amps. Each size torch uses its own size "consumables" so if you decide to go with all three of the usual aircooled bunch you'll have to also have a mess of pieces for each size torch AND each size tungsten.  I now have all three air (properly gas) cooled torches plus one #20 watercooled torch and it wouldn't surprise me if the money I've spent lately for these "accessories" amounts to at least half the initial cost of the welder.  I'm saying that if you want to keep the costs down it would be smart to figure out what you really need for what you want to use the welder for so you can cut to the chase more quickly and cheaply (is 'cheaply' a word?) than I have.edit: I'm not sure if all #26 air cooled torches are rated the same but I looked in the HTP catalog to see that their #26 air cooled is only good for 200 amps so even the biggest air torch will get hot pretty quick if you weld the 3/16"  for long at a sitting.Last edited by hill; 01-30-2014 at 02:09 PM.MM210TA186TA95sLincoln AC/DC Tombstonegood old Smith torch setup 24v Readywelder mig w/spoolgunSB H 10 latheBridgeport mill6x12 K.O.Lee surface grinderK.O.Lee tool/cutter grinder
Reply:Hill thank you a lot .  I have an old Cobramatic wire fed system we used to build tail gates on aluminum coal dump trailers back in the late 70s early 80s.   I think we used 1/4 inch and a little 5/16 back then.   I may did it out and just see if it still works.  Most of my stuff is from that era and been in storage a long time.
