There's a used lincoln AC arc welder at my local steel supply going for $125. Looks used, but i've seen worse looking machines that work just fine. My question is, this one has a white tap dial. some have black dials. what's the diff? Is 125bucks for a used one a little pricy, or should i snag it? thanks for any advise.
Reply:brand new they go for 240.00 so thats your call. Does it look like they took care of it? How are the cables? are you going to have to repair or replace anything on it.
Reply:yea, the cables will have to be replaced. I see theres an AC225 and a AC/DC 225. I see the later of the two goes for ~450. that's why i though i'd be gettin a deal. i'm gonna pass on that one and keep an eye open for an ac/dcversion. thanks for the reply Rubenz.
Reply:I've seen AC225's listed in papers around here for as little as $65 and as much as $175. If the units is well worn then I'd have to say it is slightly on the expensive side. Especially if cable replacement is required.As to Welders and pricing do go to Milers or Lincolns web site for manufactures list for a current new model. Then take 20 to 30% off that price to get a ball park real selling price for new hardware. Used stuff should not be considered unless there is a discount well below that price for somehting in lke new condition. Something used, especially somehtng that looks like it has been used should be discunted heavily. Even on these little buzz boxes.Sure there is less to go wrong on a buzz box, but cables are expensive as are things like main switches and fans.ThanksDave
Reply:Dave, thanks for the insight on buying used. I'll do just that. I'm not in dire need of a buzz box right now so i can spend some time lookin around and find one that looks a little better taken care of. thanks all for the replies.
Reply:If you are looking for an ac/dc unit like the lincoln used consider the following as close substitutes (some with more featrues, some with less)...feel free guys to add in others you think are similar, cause I know there are more brands to consider...miller ac/dc 225/150 thunderboldthobart ac/dc stickmatelincoln ac/dc 225/125These are probably the three most popular entry level ac/dc machines.I have used several brands of ac/dc buzzbox machines and they are all pretty reliable. If they work when you get them, they generally will for a long time. The only thing that I have seen break is the fan and the dial/selector.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:as always, thanks Smitty. I've heard of all of these brands and will keep an eye out for somthing worth bringin home. for now i'll keep practicing with my new mig. I'm havin a blast layin beads with it. I can't wait to do something significant with it. I've got so many project ideas but of course, not enough time or money for any of them. I wish steel wasn't so dam'd expensive. |
