there are real carbon fiber hoods like this:http://store.cyberweld.com/jaweheneauda.htmland fake ones that just have a sticker pattern.http://www.zoro.com/i/G4660065/?utm_...fUtRoCPA7w_wcBharborfreight cheap plastic hood weighs about 1.3 poundsthe real carbon fiber is 1 pound, a whopping 6 oz difference.anyone use the real carbon fiber hoods, how do you like them!???
Reply:I have a mask like that but mines not boss. I like it alot. Doesn't even compare to HF mask
Reply:As far as I know those are not CF hoods, just a thin plastic.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:I felt those new Jackson hoods and didn't think they would provide enough side or throat coverage for me.  The older shadow style is still domestic.  Where is the newer, small Halo style made?
Reply:That Boss isn't carbon fiber, just made to look like that.

Reply:If a person was after super light the AD lense would kind of offset any weight savings of carbon fiber.
Reply:Carbon fiber isn't the lightest thing around; its benefit is its strength per unit weight.  A welding hood doesn't need to be especially strong; I'd imagine a lighter hood could be made from other materials that would be perfectly fine.Hobart cutting/welding torch.MM252, and nothing else.  My first welder.  Buy once, cry once....but I really would like a nice 50/60A circuit to run it at full strength.A bunch of ideas, and not enough time and money to bring them to life.
Reply:That hood looks like faux carbon fiber to me. Carbon fiber is actually pretty pretty to look at and only a bozo would buy the fake stuff. I don't have much experience with it and it does not apply to hoods but in cycling I hated the carbon fiber frames. The seemed to take most of the effort put into the pedals sprinting and absorb them in frame flex. A very nice ride but rather like using soft handle ratchets. Too much wasted effort.I don't think I can complain about the weight of any welding helmet I have ever worn.
Reply:Even if its not real cf it still looks cool lol. You should be more worried about the lense then the shell anyway. That's were the magic is

Reply:True CF is not practical for a welding lid, IMPO.  CF is so 1990s.  You want lightweight?  Wait until helmets fabricated of Graphene, Carbyne, and Ultralight Mettalic Microlattice hit mainstream.  Up in smoke will go the user's $cratch.  Edit:  see post #14 of http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...welding-helmet.  Having personally handled/cut/built with CF for several years, this dude is spot on.  Nasty $hit.Last edited by ManoKai; 06-04-2015 at 09:01 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
