What's your go to brand of paint? I've had the best luck with duplicolor so far, but even that chips off nearly instantly on metal when it gets hit.
Reply:U-POL automotive primers and paints.  Sprayed from an hvlp...I don't really use the rattle can stuff.--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:U-POL is good stuff. Even their spray in bed liner. I use Rustoleum when using a rattle can.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I use U-pol raptor liner. Great product.
Reply:Depends on what it is for.
Reply:Used to be krylon for rattle can. Automotive Dupont and no telling what for equipment paint. Every time you turn around they're selling a different brand up here. The autobody shop is advertising a new water based type paint. Don't know. If it can't kill or incapacitate you it prolly aint no good.Arcon Workhorse 300MSPowcon 400SMTPowcon SM400 x 2Powcon SM3001968 SA200 Redface1978 SA250 DieselMiller Super 32P FeederPre 1927 American 14" High Duty LatheK&T Milwaukee 2H Horizontal MillBryan

Reply:Glidden sells an industrial paint that is used on the bridges in Halifax Harbour.  Haven't used it on equipment, but did paint our front door with it.  Dogs can't even harm it when they scratch the door.  No fade after 10 years.  Glidden is world wide, I'll see if I can track down the name...

Reply:Duplicolor for rattle can.  For black, I use Rust Tough.  Excellent spray quality, quick drying, and VERY durable.  Great to have some cans around for fab stuff.  Never used primer with it..no problems either.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

Reply:For cheap equipment type paint anymore it's valspar equipment paint or sometimes rustoleum with some cheap hardener.  I don't think I could go back to not using hardener.  Valspar makes a gray primer that is called gray tractor and implement primer, I like that too for staying with cheap paints.Last edited by cd19; 03-14-2014 at 02:09 PM.
Reply:CD, what type of hardener are you using in Rustoleum?
Reply:PPG Deltron or Valu pro for automotive, Have also used Dupont Chromebase and Nason with good success in the past.  Been using PPG dt2000 clear also, very nice and dries fast (expensive tho) and use PPG or Montana brand sealer. I'm pretty much locked into the PPG paint system now, Gonna get into the waterborne system soon. For equipment or tractor paint I use VanSickle brand from the farm supply store used with a hardner and clearing over it makes a nice finish. I steer away from the rattle can stuff unless I need to sprinkle a guide coat on to sand off before laying down primer or sealer, to make sure its blocked out good. I'm a believer in buying good quality paint products, I have tried cheaper stuff, then use twice as much paint to get the desired results. So I just go for the good stuff now.Quality work is never Cheap, and Cheap work is never Quality!!If it's broke, and you're not, we can fix it!!  Lincoln Idealarc sp200Century 230amp ac/dcSmith O/A TorchesHuth Hyd. Reply:The best spraybomb paint I have used is Great Dane branded. You have to get it from a Great Dane dealer but it makes Krylon or Rustoleum look like the 99 cent stuff at K-mart.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:Most of the paints I use are pretty pricey, but are bullet proof.  Obviously Imron is best, but it is really expensive.  I have had good luck with rustoleum 9800 urethane mastic, but it's hard to spray. I've sprayed commercial playgrounds with both and it holds up like powdercoat.  Iv'e also used it on rental patio boats (above waterline) It's about $120 gallon, Imron can be twice that.

Reply:Originally Posted by AntiblingI use Rustoleum as well, I just make sure I mix a touch of hardener in with the gloss or you'll be waiting a long time for it to dry.  You can thin it with Acetone which I keep plenty on hand for aluminum welding.
Reply:rustoleum
Reply:Although I mentioned the paint's I use normally, I am tempted to try "Awlgrip polyurethane" after seeing results from some contractors in Hawaii.  It is cheaper than the brands I mentioned and they say it is just as good.  On my marina's I use rustoleum's rusty metal damp proof primer and leave it as a finish.  You can't do that with most primers.
Reply:Gotta be a paint snob here, Devoe Epoxies and Awlgrip for topcoats, if Awlgrip isnt avalible I use Imiron. Reply:Rustoleum primer and paint for most projects, the brush on variety usually, but some times I put it in my spray gun too. I keep a few rattle cans of Rustoleum primer around for touch ups and smaller projects. Here in Canada it's Tremclad, both rattle cans and bulk brush onThey have been bought by Rustoleum in the last couple of years.
Reply:I work at a Marina as well.  I have used the rustoleum 9800 urethane mastic for years, but was shown the awlgrip in Hawaii.  I intend to try it next time.  I'm very picky on paint jobs, I don't care if I pay $200 a gallon for paint, it needs to be equivelent to powdercoat, and have good gloss retention. The 9800 is a direct to metal paint, although I usually still use a epoxy primer.  Which awlgrip/primer combination have you found best?  My main use for it would be rental houseboats (above waterline) and commercial playgrounds.  Both highly abused areas.  Originally Posted by Cape Cod GaryGotta be a paint snob here, Devoe Epoxies and Awlgrip for topcoats, if Awlgrip isnt avalible I use Imiron. Reply:valspar renew.   Tractor dealers are the place to find it.  About forty bucks a can.
Reply:So for clean steel, 545 primer?  What finish coat?
Reply:545 is universal metal primer, Plain ol Awlgrip for top coats. Reply:For benches, tables, and stuff like that I use OXIRITE (brushed on, two thick coats, takes two weeks to fully cure). It goes on without primer, doesn't chip and has a beautiful finish ("martele"). For me works just fine.Mikel
Reply:I use either Dulux industrial range of paints or if the client stipulates at paint it's usually International.
