What is grade 201 stainless steel? I'm going to replace the rusty carbon steel hinges on my welder's side panels with a piano hinge and seen some on ebay of this stainless grade, but I've never heard of it. It is not drilled, nor will need any welding, only needing cut to length as the hinges are in 72" lengths. The side panels are added sheet aluminum so will clamp them square to the opening and through drill the panels and hinges together.Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Filler metal of the conventional chromium-nickel analyses can be used. Like other austenitic stainless steels where carbon is not controlled below 0.03%, Type 201 is susceptible to intergranular corrosion in the weld heat affected zone.

Reply:201 is similar to 304 except cheaper and not as corrosion resistant as it uses Manganese instead of Nickel in the alloy
Reply:What ohjake said plus one other thing--it work hardens easier than T304 so can become more brittle and crack in some situations.  It's "sold up" as some sort of new more wear resistant stainless when it's really a crappier grade for most applications.  Profit margins are higher that T304 because they don't usually give back all of the price reductions from using cheaper material.The problem is, if your competitor starts using it you almost HAVE to follow because their prices will look lower--downhill spiral of chasing cheap.

Reply:It'll be fine.  I just have a bone to pick about the crap and spewed a bit.  I have a competitor who's talked up the "wear resistance" when the parts almost NEVER fail from wear....
