Reply:Timing lights show the position of the crankshaft timing mark relative to the #1 cylinder spark pulse.  Most older timing lights do NOT show RPM.  For that, you need a tachometer.  Back in the day, you could get one for under $30.Seems you can still get them for about that price.  These are inductive pickup units, so you only need to clip the probe around a sparkplug wire.  These are for 4-6-8 cylinder engines.  For engines with fewer cylinders, you do some mental math to get the speed or you use a photo tachometer (see below). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/17208...item2eb14dc9c5http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/INDUC...item43a10763fdThe alternative is a phototach, which counts light reflections (usually from a piece of shiny tape) on a moving part of the engine.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HQRP-...item5196d086a8John
Reply:Cool idea Back in the 70's I was a FE for a computer company that is how we set the speed on magnetic tape machines.  There was a black and white disk on the capstand you would look at it and adjust a pot for the correct speed. The flicker from the fluorescent light will act like a strobe light and sync with your pattern for speed checks.have funtom

Reply:Or for $25.00 to $250.00 you could get a phototach and use it everything is the shop. http://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Spe.../dp/B000RFK50S"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
