I hope I am in the right section.  If not I will find out shortly.  mean while I recently purchased an anvil.  It has the following information;O   WRAUGP ANTEDMFG 90A lower case g with a large period on the tail of the letter1 & 1/4" Hardy9/16 round hole adjacent to itWeighs  230#Square design legs resembles a Peter Wright model.  Its in great shape.  A guy turned it into a local scrap yard and received six cents a pound for it.  I had to pay a bit more to the employee that rescued it.As soon as i can post a picture ( or figure out how ) I will share a couple views.Hope someone can make something of the visible letters I was able to copy. Thanks
Reply:Seems to me that an anvil, besides being a good friend who can sing to us, is also technically a tool, so your post fits here just fine. I have a number of them, but none is both in great shape and from a well-known company, and I've never researched the brands much, so can't comment on the markings except to say it's obviously an old one. Hope the worker had the sense or understanding to realize he was preserving an irreplaceable item, not just making some extra cash.
Reply:Thanks for the reply Old Iron.  No I don't believe he had any interest in history or tools, just a quick hundred and gettig it out of the salvage center in his lunch box .  I have to read farther to find out how to post a picture as it is easier to view than describe.  I would suspect this anvil has been in a family for several generations. Its a shame a family possession is tossed away at a rate of six cents a pound.

Reply:Your rusty anvil looks a lot like my 230# Peter Wright.  If it is a Peter Wright, it will have the name prominently on the side, either in squared-off lettering, or in a circular pattern.  Below the name, the weight will be listed in HundredWeight terms.  Anvils are pieces of our history and should be treated as such.  Glad you rescued yours, whatever it turns out to be.DougMiller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:Nice save and score!! I shudder to think how many useable anvils have gone to the scrapyard , especially over the past couple of years when scrap prices got so high.
Reply:It's probably wrought (vs. cast) because the lettering is stamped into the side instead of into the mold like PapaLion's photo . . . and looks a lot like my Peter Wright . . . which also looks like a Trenton, made by the decendents of Peter Wright (Sy and Carl Wright) in Columbus Ohio.  However I can't match the lettering to any brand I know of.  If you lightly hit the area around the lettering with an orbital sander you may be able to identify more detail. Here's a link to a list of anvil makers that may help . . .http://www.blackiron.us/anvils.htmlJimDynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
