dad wants the bucket blade on his new holland 445D industrial redone. catipillar has and 8ft blade for sale for 350$ but the bucket is 7ft wide, and then i would to have the exsisting weldes air arced out. and then cut the blade down to size and weld it in. i proposed hardsurfacing it to dad and said post it to here and let the pros answer. i know there is hard surfacing stick rods and mig wire. if i was which is best? (i can run mig ,stick or lift arc tig) he doesnt want to drop more then 500 on it. any suggestions guys? the buckets wore down from cutting knarly palmetto roots in the swamps and being abused from pulling dirt off concrete.
Reply:You know that cutting edges are made of hardened steel and you really don't need to hard face them for adverage useMost of the time we bend the 6" on each end for cheek wear on the corners of the bucket ...unless you want to cut it off but the bucket wears without that at the cornersYou can do the hardfacing but why if you don't need too because the rod/wire is expensiveSent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2Backed my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Most times I've seen guys think about hardfacing, the equipment is well beyond the point where hard facing should have been applied. "Worn out" is NOT when you look at hardfacing something. You do it when it's still in decent shape with some wear, so you prolong the original material. By the time you have to do buildup, then hard face, it's often less expensive to simply rebuild/replace the original parts. You might look around for other places to get your edge. I can pick up parts from the dealers, but then I pay way more money. I've got a place that's semi local that supplies generic teeth, cutting edges and so on to contractors, municipalities, quarries and so on. I pay a lot less for the same basic parts with out the CAT, CASE or JD logo on them with the color match paint. There's a really good reason guys around here refer to our G&R CAT dealer as "Gangsters and Robbers". .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Maybe use it like it is for now. Then latter buy some AR-400 or 500 to replace the cutting edge.I just did this to a friends front end loader bucket after I lengthened the bucket. Reply:Just cut it out and weld the new one in after you cut it to size
Reply:@DSW - Can you provide info on that supplier. Believe it or not, I can get a skid steer attachment plate, delivered, cheaper than I can buy one local. I did go with a CAT edge for the snow bucket I built, because they were cheaper than all other local dealers.@CEP - Nice job on the bucket. Do you think that flame cutting the edge will do anything in regards to the integrity of the AR x00 material? Is that you in the pic, or the bucket owner?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"

Reply:Flame cutting is commonly the method for cutting AR400. I have flame cut and saw cut the same parts and seen no difference in wear in tub grinder parts which see a constant beating.
