I am in need of making a decently heavy duty hinge. It will be used on a door made as a firefighter training prop so it needs to be pretty heavy duty. It will be welded on.Is my best bet just to get some pipe and steel bar stock to put through it?
Reply:best bet would be a piece of pipe and a round piece of brass or stainless that fits inside the pipe.
Reply:3/4 PIPE, 5/8 or 11/16 grade 5 bolts(depends on the pipe quality).Make the door. Use wedges to place and plumb it in the hole.Slip the bolt through the three 1" inch long pieces. Weld the top and bottom piece to the door and the center piece to the jam(or other door or ?). The bolt is your pin.If you ever get to Coral Castle South of Miami have a look at the hinge on the main entrance   2 1/2 inch pin I think....BUUUUUURP !Heres Da  DOOR. The pin is in Da middle. Don't ask.The requirement was that a child could open and shut it.Last edited by Burpee; 03-25-2014 at 05:41 AM.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:@ BrooklnBravest - access images of hinge this dude fab'd for a DIY 30" press bake, http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=244123.  Many ways to create a heavy-duty hinge.  Imagination and experimentation are your guide.  Good luck!"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:What are the chances of it rusting or freezing stiff. We made a few heavy doors for a farmer and he requested we use a round pin in square tube. Claimed he never had a door seize or get stiff using this method.Airco Heliweld II AC/DC HomeMade Wire FeederLincoln 255PLincoln HD130Everlast PP804x8 CNC TableWelding helps me build my hobbies and takes up time on the side.
Reply:It won't its indoors.

Reply:Not sure what you are getting at asking whats special about it? Nothing is special at all.I'm not paying for it, I'm not a business. Just a fireman with a hobby trying to help the men. The municipality won't order parts on ebay they have an account with a steel supplier, a welding supply and home depot. And isn't it more satisfying to make it yourself?
Reply:The door will work like the one in this video (we actually own one of his doors, but its clearly a standalone device)We have a training center that I am going to replicate a similar design inside of to simulate apartment doors under heavy smoke conditions. The only proprietary thing on the door in the video, is the hinged side is actually on sliding springs so if you take the tool out of the door jamb, it closes on. I'm not looking to go that crazy. (that door cost around $5,000)
Reply:"Danny" needs Z87 goggles for the demo.  Get the axe approach, as fireman use axes &  Halligam tools like warriors use long rifles.  But, why not rip a sledge as the inertia loader?"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:rip a sledge? I don't get it.The tools carried are personal preference or whatever your department/agency prefer to use. Personally I like the axe because its lighter and a more versatile tool than a two sided hammer. But at the same time, the sledge is 4 lbs heavier and has massively more striking force.
Reply:I would just buy good weld on gate hinges. Making them is just too time consuming to get poorer quailty hinges than the bought ones.
Reply:Here's what I did on my tractor cab.....just a steel round bar inter coursing a sleeve.
Reply:I use roller chain links for a lot of hinges. # 160 chain links are just about indestructible .Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Esab 161lts miniarc.

Reply:If you decide to make hinges, then a combination of metric and standard drill bits will create a good fitting barrel hinge without a lathe.
Reply:One of the challenges in what I do is simplifying while finding the most economical method of some things because the projects are in the developing nations. http://ubuntublox.com/What I have came up with is using bolts and nuts.  Use one size smaller bolt than the nut.  It doesn't matter if it's SAE or metric either.  Bolts and nuts are always available and if one is serious about a hinge they will work.I build custom gates and what I have used for gates weighing a hundred pounds or less for many years is 7/8" steel tubing with 1/8" wall thickness for the female.  That allows me to use standard J bolts for the pins.  The tubing is expensive and I can only buy it a couple of different places.  But since I only use an inch of the tubing for a hinge they cost less than $.15 each.  I also make bigger stuff like heavy strap hinges with the material, just use longer pieces of the tubing. One of the biggest advantages of making your own hinges is you can offset them and make gravity hinges.  Those blow the minds of the Home Depot/Harbor Freight oriented.life is good
