Is there much difference stick welding with 240v vs. 110v in terms of teqniuque or to the average joe. Can I play with stick on 110v and easily move to 240v is what I'm trying to say. The long and short..the 240v isn't hooked up yet, but I put the cart up front in front of the horse and picked up some 1/8" 7018 rods. For the 110 I'm thinking it's a little large and will have a fun time with those, (scarcasm) but I'm willing to grab some 3/32 or 1/16 whichever suits. I'd just like to practice a bit and only can do so on 110v for the time, I hope the message is understood. Would the same rules (I guess) apply to using 110v with a smaller rod? If I jumped to 240v I would assume arc lenght, watch the puddle, etc would be close to the same?? Obvisly the 240v machine is gonna have a higher penatration, but I'm just looking to practice on 110v and thinner material for the time being and hone some skill. I don't know and I'm wanting to learn some stick. Any help regarding the question please? Thanks. Pidge.Lincoln210mpHobart Handler 125...soldBoat battery and a couple coat hangers
Reply:I think with a 110-volt stick welder youll be limited to 3/32 rod. Any practice is going forward.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:If your 210mp is like my ESAB 161, 3/32" rods will weld just fine on 120volts input.I like them 90-100 amps for 3/32" 7018.Light 'em if ya got 'em and have fun Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Agree that 3/32 is the limit on 110. I got some 1/8 7014 to light with my Multimatic, but it didnt last more than a decent tack.I dont find much diff at all running a 3/32 7018 on 110 or 230 with my machine. Changes in rod size are trivial once you get technique down. 3/32 will actually be more of a challenge as they are not nearly as stiff as 1/8" and move more if you are not steady.Multimatic 200Ellis 1800Haberle S225 9" cold sawMM 300; Spoolmate 30A w/ WC-24TB 302GDynasty 280 DX Tigrunner
Reply:Droopy--I really did notice that in regaurds to the stiffness of the rods, which I was really surprised how much the 3/32 flexed compared to the 1/8" I realize is thinner, but the whip/flex was a bit of a learning curve. Minnesota Dave--oddly enough (to me anyways) I didn't really notice a difference with regaurds to both rods, but I'm sure there was. The puddle is definatly a lot smaller in my eyes for just a 1/16th decrease in size, but I did have fun. CEP--true man, any practice is going forward and with this I've noticed it dose take practice. I regret not taking any pics, mind you guys they weren't anything spectacular. I was welding on any old crap I could get my mits on in terms of steel. If I get some time in again this weekend I'll snap a few and perhaps I'd get some constructive critism. Practice practice practice. Thanks guys for the response and positive feed back. Reply:That's the order I learned in. Let me tell you when I got my 220 machine and started using 1/8" rods they were so easy!
