What is the correct symbol for laser welding a ground wire to a plate? I'm a drafter and the engineer wants to use a spot weld both sides symbol, but that really doesn't exist from what I've researched. Maybe a spot weld is incorrect? Looking down at the flat surface, the wire on top would be welded to the plate like this:   ------X------  ----X---X----The dashed lines would be the "sides" of the wire, and the X's would be the welds. Reply:i'm think the symbol is a circle.     if the welding process isn't footnoted or listed in structural notes, the abreviations of the welding process can go behind the tail of the reference line.     you can run three arrows off that same line to point where they go
Reply:It looks like it is a circle and the type of spot weld is put in the tail. You need to make a line with an arrow like any other welding symbol and you can put the spacing and other info with the circle indicating a spot weld.
Reply:Thanks for the responses. But my issue is with the "both sides" part. Normally, I would think to indicate that I would put a circle above and below the symbol line, for arrow side and other side. But our software won't allow that, and my symbol table says that's not used.

Reply:Okay, that only shows it on one side, either above or below. Look at this chart snippet taken from the American Welding Society Welding Symbol Chart (AWS A2.4:2007):Frankly, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to show it with two circles, one on each side, but it looks like that's discouraged.
Reply:How can there be a spot weld from both sides? It would join both sides anyway but depending on how the spot weld was made would indicate which side it was made from. The circle through the line would indicate a spot weld made a machine with 2 electrodes and done on both sides at the same time. A MIG spot weld would usually be done from one side.
Reply:Thanks Dave, I was kinda thinking the same thing although I'm not a welder. I think the weld my engineer is looking for isn't really a spot weld. Maybe a series of really short fillet welds. He's looking into it.
