I need to make some practise pieces for our NDT (non destructive testing) personnel, in steel, stainless steel and aluminium.lack of fusion, porosities, cracks, ... (all kinds actually)blowing away the gas shielding will probably make for some faults, but I still have no clue how to make bad welds. Any tips (besides hiring Mr. Tig for a few days of work)?
Reply:Me too, no mater how I try I can't make a bad weld. I only wish that were true. I could fill 1000 pages with what to do, then, next time it happens to me, I'd still wonder what went wrong. The easy one is the one I occasionally do; forget to turn the gas on. Perhaps a million other factors can make dog $hit.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Oh, I wanna play!First watch an hour of Mr. Tig.Prepare a coupon and stick it in the freezer.Set your gas to half flow. Break off your tungsten and do not grind it.Grease up your gloves--put a little on the jointUse too small filler.Hold torch and filled in opposite hands.Drink many beers before pulling coupon out of freezer.Bad luck dude!Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Sounds like you're after hidden defects not visible on the surface. How about doing something like a tight square butt joint out of 1/4" coupons. You could weld one side complete. Flip over and backgrind except for 2" in the middle. Carefully weld the background areas and then turn your heat down to intentionally leave a 2" line of lack of fusion. Then put on a pretty cover pass over all. For cracks you could get some hardsurfacing stick rod. Use this as filler on cold plate and it's almost certain to produce surface cracking.

Reply:try for stick welding with water over where you weld..Try for Tig to not put any filler metal in, and just walk the cup...For mig just keep things normal...VictorPraxairAir LiquideMillerLincoln Electric
Reply:The AWS sells sample coupons with weld defects for just this purpose, but they are quite expensive as I recall. If you could somehow get hold of some of the fine specimens posted in the "Welding Fail" thread, you'd be in business!JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps |
