Reply:Are you melting down your illgotten pirate booty again there Zap? Finding it hard to get change for a full gold bar down at the convenience store when you get your morning cup of coffee, so you have to cut it in two? .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Hey Zap,Well, looking at the color & physical attributes of the cast, I'd guess brass as the color is too light for bronze. The cast looks too surface porous & some impurities to be gold. Of course, with you & the jobs you get, anything would not be a surprise.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:The cuttings look more like copper to me, so does the oxide coating on the ingot, plus the nature of the cavitation from shrinkage seems right for that. Copper is tough and gummy; although some hardness might come from impurities, by the time things like lead are high enough to form silicates, the alloy is probably considered a brass. I'm not that familiar with high copper-nickle alloys and variations of them, nor with all bronze alloys in ingot form...(yet ... haven't fired up my furnace in a while either). That is definitely not lead; color, crust, turnings are all wrong. Not likely gold either, although some low-gold alloys might behave somewhat like that.Offhand, I can't think of any exotic metals like Germanium which resemble that (and which would be handled that way) either. Guess I'll just wait 'till tomorrow.
Reply:Im thinking copper... could be brass which is soft but by the picture, I would also say copper.
Reply:Yeller brass?My name's not Jim....
Reply:Ingots that you have to cut in half all the time?Curiouser and curiouser ...Not only am I now curious about WHAT the ingots are, but also WHY you have to cut them in half all the time.It -shouldn't- be any Be alloys, otherwise the PPE and clean-up requirements get HUGE.  The best laid schemes ... Reply:I'll throw my hat in the ring with silicon bronze.  I know that we have to machine it all the time and it cuts like stainless, hard and stringy. It is quite expensive per pound, in plate form.
Reply:Pig Iron castings?? (top 2 pics) the rest of the pics the incandescent lighting gives the metal a slightly yellow tone. Some Pig irons contain alot of recycled metals of various types making the metal malleable and when cut the cutting blades will gum up with the various metals.Just my guess after seeing the way Bethlehem steel in Philly did some ingots before they were further refined down  to customer specifications.could also be recyled aluminum cast in ingot form those will really screw up a bladeLast edited by specter; 02-09-2011 at 10:49 AM.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:OK 24 hrs is up and still no correct guesses..The material in question is recycled SILVER in it's trashiest form..The bars do not fit in the smelter that separates silver from all the other trash mixed in it..The owners weigh everything and re weighs it when he gets it back.Has to be within one ounce and this job is done in one day so none of it is in the shop overnite..It may not look like silver but the shop lighting is to blame for that..(See Post #3)Thanks for playing!...zap!Last edited by zapster; 02-09-2011 at 04:48 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:So I'm guessing by picture 3, all filings from cutting will be collected and returned to the customer? That must be a pain in the a$$.kidtigger24  They think I’m crazy, but I know better. It is not I who am crazy. It is I who am MAD!
