One of my customers gave me this old Dayton Speedaire hose reel that will not reel in. It was fully reeled when he leased the shop several years ago and never used it till today. Pulled it out and it wouldn't go back. So it's mine now, thought I'd see if anyone has had one apart before I tear into it.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Did it break the spring?  Does it still have spring force on it when you pull on the hose?Maybe he just wasn't letting it recoil fast enough to keep the catch from hanging it up. Reply:9 out of ten times it's been pulled too far.  Clamp it down to a bench, have someone (that you trust with your fingers) gently pull on the hose, with gloves, force the drum even further around until it gets by the ratchet stop.   Sometimes you can just wind a turn or two onto the drum, as it is now, clamp it down, and pull past the stop. This all applies only if the spring is intact.Does the drum turn free or is it "stuck"?Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:It doesn't feel like the spring is broke. I was there when he pulled the hose out. We pulled it a little at a time, there was spring tension and you could feel it "catch" when you would stop pulling, it just would not reverse. then he decided it needed to be pulled all the way out to make it work, but obviously that wasn't the case. If I open it up is there any danger of the spring launching? Is it just a big clock spring?Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:If you cant get it to return, call W.W. Grainger. They will be able to tell you pretty much anything you would need to know about that."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:well if ya have to open it up take lots of pics is it maybe like a bigger version of a lawnmower recoil spring if so be careful with it 350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:Looks like the spring may be under the cover that's on the top in your last picture.  I'd expect that cover to go roundy-round quite violently if you take out the screws that are around it's edge.  I might try to take the cover screws out, then slowly let the cover spin to release the spring tension.  Then you can get into it to see what went wrong.First I'd do what tessdad said.  Try to pull it a little more and jiggle it to see if the catches will come loose.  It might come loose easier when the reel is horizontal (like shown in your pics).  I think the catch is just a set of 'dog' levers that fall onto a toothed wheel.  The dogs will sling to the outside when the reel rewinds quickly and they won't catch.  If the reel is horizontal, then gravity won't be trying to make the dog fall down against the toothed wheel.  In any case, that thing is a loaded weapon.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:I got one almost exactly like that. It would not work when I got it. I took it apart and all that was wrong with it was the spring had jumped out of the notch that held one end. Before I took it apart it felt like the spring was broke but luckily it wasn't. Simple fix on mine. Good luck!
Reply:I think I figured it out. There is a large cam with notches in it on the side where a spring loaded catch engages and holds the reel. I think there is supposed to be a nylon wheel on the catch to help it roll in and out of the notches as you roll and unroll. It is just a post, and it can't get up out of the notch once it drops in, there has to be a wheel missing. You can see the post down in there.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Ahh, so there's no solid catch on that one!  How is it supposed to rewind?  If it's spinning fast enough on the rewind will it 'bump through' the cam?Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:Pulled it apart, there is definately a wheel missing here. I don't know if it was nylon, steel or rubber. The axle is riveted on, so I could press a rubber wheel onto it. Otherwise I'll have to go with a steel wheel so I can braze the axle back on, or maybe if I can figure another way to attach the axle I could use a nylon wheel. There is no clearance for any screw heads or nuts on either side of the small axle shaft, so it must be riveted or brazed.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Maybe use a thinner steel wheel so it leaves enough room for a washer and cotter pin.  I'm thinking the washer and cotter pin would be thinner than trying to get a nut on there.Maybe just a washer that you tack weld on.  You should be able to get it almost the same dimensions that it is now.  I don't guess they'll be a lot of side load on the washer, so just a little tack might hold it.  You can later break the tack and replace the wheel if needed.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
