Hi i could really use some advice on landing my first working gig, in ontario canadaIm currently almost done a 6 month welding course at a local technical school that my dad agreed to pay for, but in the last 2 years ive been unemployed (due to health reasons) and i have student loans in default from going to community college for computer programming which i hated. i like welding much more, but how much trouble will my bad credit give me when searching for my first job? ive heard that if i'd lie about my experience i'd have a higher chance to land work, but i have 8k in student loans in a collection agency and im broke. I have no criminal history im in ontario canada if it makes any difference. i dont know how it works in other provinces but in ontario any employer can request a credit check for any reason and for any job, and if they do that im screwedare credit checks extremely prevalent with employers/employment agencies?
Reply:Credit checks are generally only done for security sensitive or financial jobs. Reply:Credit check are not the problem.  If your wages are garnisheed most employers will drop you simply because they don't want to be bothered.  What you need to do is start making payments.  If it is five dollars a week you can afford then pay it.  Also go to a PROPER debt counselor.  Most provinces have government agents who walk people through this nightmare.  There should be one at your campus student services.  He/she might be able to make some sort of agreement so you are not being bothered by a collection agency.  It sounds like you are seriously in debt if a collection agency got hold of it.  Please don't tell me you took out a loan with a finance company.  When the Lord tossed out Satan, the fiance company and collection guys were waiting there for him.   You need to sit down and make a payment plan that you can stick to it.  Personally my view of someone who is foolish enough to take out a student loan is not running on all cylinders.  Part of getting an education is starving, sleeping on a mattress on a concrete basement floor with bricks and wood for bookshelves and seating.  It teaches the value of a dollar.   Most companies do not involve themselves with credit checks unless the employee is handling money and there is a risk of theft.

Reply:As someone mentioned just pay a small amount on that debt each month.  Often if you negotiate you can get the interest ignored if they see a chance to recover the debt.  If you don't know this when a debt is given over to a collection agency they buy your debt at something like ten cents on the dollar.  They know that some debts will never be collected but they play the odds.  There are rules about how they can harass you.  Know the rules. You sometimes can offer them say 50 % of the debt cash immediately and they will sign off on it.  Talk to a debt counselor and not some guy who wants to charge you a hundred dollar consulting fee.  Revenue Canada wrote off something like one BILLION in bad debts for taxes just last week.  It was in the news.   I gotta tell this tale.  When I taught in prison I had a guy in for bank robbery among other things.  He was a real piece of work and smart.  For a time he worked for a collection agency and used every trick in the book to collect money.  He would scare the dickens out of the client which he was not allowed to do then negotiate a settlement like... " Bring me 500 dollars in the next half hour and I will sign this off.  The poor sap would come in at the time and our hero would pocket the money, sign a fake receipt and ditch the paperwork.  He found out that the owner of a local bar had bad debts .... brought it up over drinks and negotiated to ditch the files if he and his friends could drop by for free drinks once and awhile.  He ran this scam for a few months before taking off.  He actually was their top collector in the staff.... A shining star LOL   I worked with a lady welder who worked as a collector for extra money.  She played all kinds of tricks to find where guys had moved to and where they were working.  A nice voice to the guy's roomate and he would spill thinking he was lining his buddy up with some girl he had met last week.
Reply:Starting out life lying to get a job isn't exactly the high road. It can only go down hill from there."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:I never lied to get ahead in my welding career.  I got out of a 6 month welding course in summer of 2013 with 9 welding certifications including 2 pipe certs and no one would hire me even tho I was one of the top welders at my school.  After a few months I got blessed with a welding job finaly making 12.00 a hour the whole time i was in school i was telling my friends I would be making close to 20 out of school lol!!  Well a couple jobs later and Im very experienced with Mig and Stick welding and fabricating now I get a lot more money.  You can get your first job without lying bro you should see some of the welding tests most of the people do at my job, Emplyers know a confident experienced welder when they see him test out.... Good luck and while youre in school make sure before you land your first job you are very comfertable with your tape measure and you know how to square things up and know some of the basics of fabrication.  I wish someone would have told me that when I was in school.  Good luck broLast edited by Lunchbox148; 07-20-2015 at 09:12 PM.
Reply:And for the record every ad on craigslist for every job I have worked for demanded no less than 5 years experience dont let that stop you these places need welders.

Reply:I would hire someone with bad credit but not a liar. I think that everyone lies about something to some extent or other but you don't lie about that even if they tell you they are not going to check your references. If you have to ask if you should lie to get work you just don't sound too bright to me to me to begin. I can honestly say I hope you get called out.
Reply:I'm a fool I guess.Helped pay fer college with a loan.Loan paid. The mistake is taking a loan and thinking you are not responsible for the debt NO MATTER what happens after you graduate. Reply:I live in Ontario, and i think i only had one credit check years ago when i worked security. I wouldn't worry about it too much, lots of people have horrible credit. I agree with making small regualr payments to show commitment on paying down the debt, the hard part is some collectors are hard to get to let you do just that.Don't lie it will always go against you. See if they will let you SHOW them what you can do, Not just read it off a paper.
