i am looking for my first tig welder i dont have much money but i want to learn i am going to school to become a welder want to get a feel if anyone has any setup for cheep i live in nj ill drive if i have to thanks
Reply:You do realise the Thunderbolt is a stick welder right? Yes you could add a tig torch with gas knob and do scratch start DC tig with one, but you won't have a remote connection for a pedal or any options. You'd also have very little fine control on your amps trying to set up. To do AC you'd need the tig setup and a High freq box as well. Not the easiest to find and by the time you spend all the money on something like that you'd have been better off just getting a real tig.Look for an old Miller 330A/BP or similar transformer machine. I've seen them listed on CL in the Philly area from time to time for $500 or so. They are big, heavy, and need at least a 50 or 60 amp breaker minimum, 100-125 amp would be better. That would give you a real AC/DC tig that most likely you will take years to outgrow..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
