I'm WAY beyond working on an offshore rig (too old), but I've noticed that many of them hire guys to work on them full time as "welders."  I'm just curious, what kind of welding jobs would they keep you busy with on an offshore rig?-RuarkLincoln 3200HDHobart Stickmate LX235TWECO Fabricator 211i

Reply:lol.  Id like to know this question too.  I imagine things get corroded pretty quickly out there.  I would think they have the welders doing other jobs as well? Reply:I work (as a process operator) on a gasproduction platform in the North Sea, we have a welder and a pipefitter on the crew year round. Pipewelding in the plant is usually only done during a plant shutdown (once a year) because of safety concerns/regulations.But the welder (and the fitter offcourse) are busy year round with fixing/replacing railings, pipesupportings and other construction work, and those minor jobs also requires a certified welder...And regular maintenance offcourse, replacing valves, equipment and prefab piping. They don`t paint the steel, we have painters for thatSteels corrodes very quickly at sea, and that requires some carefull preparation. The painting contractor does guarantee there work, but only if all the conditions are met.First of all the surface preparation, cleaning the surface with wirebrushes, needle guns or grinders, is usually not sufficient enough to require the necessary surface roughness, that can only be achieved with abrasive blasting. The Dewpoint of the air and the steeltemperature also have to be checked prior to painting. If the steel has come in to regular contact with seawater, the steel has to be pressurewashed with potable water before painting/preparation, otherwise the chlorine content is to high on the steel (yes they can measure that, some kind of handheld device)Last edited by bluemoon; 07-26-2015 at 08:14 PM.

Reply:i bet they share alot of bs stories and get on eachothers nerves out there.    a company called me to work on there dredge one time.     they about tore the front of the pontoons off cuz this 80 foot ladder hit hardpan down in hunington, and needed it to work in the delta.   for the first week i worked w/ one of there guys, who was a descent kid, but he doing crazy things w/ jacks, grinders, etc. and was making me nervous working around him.    about 5 days into it, he was airarcing and had caught his boot on fire.       When i noticed, his boot and bott of pant leg were flaming away, and he didn't even notice.   i yelled at him.     he patted it out, ran it in the dirt etc.   after it was out, he told me he has a fake leg, so obviously he didn't feel it.     thats when i really knew this guy was accident prone.    he never did tell me how he lost it, but he had already shown me the foot long spidered out scar on his forearm where the bone had been blown out from a truck tire exploding.    he said he was filling a tire that was laying down flat on the shops floor, and when it popped it had splattered his blood under the ceiling of shop roof that was about 20 foot or so and the main femur like arm bone was hanging out.     The next week another guy shows up.   Hes a mr know it all, and proudly tells me he's a 3rd generation dredge man.    this guy is built like one of those bulldogs that constantly slobbers on itself.    Hes filled w/ tattos and earing.    the top of his forearm is filled w/ a single tattoo of full size oxy acetylene bottles  w/ a torch hose coming off it w/ torch, and says RIP next to it.     He then explains a few days later that his grandpa was an absolute ace w/ a torch, and the tattoo is dedicated to his grandpa.    next he told me that his grandpa would call him a sissy because of his earing, until one day gramps needed a sa250 put on the back of his truck.   i guess because of my confused look on my face, he then exclaimed that he alone had picked up the sa250 w/ his arms and set it on the back of a truck.   gramps then never made fun of his earing.     i had heard and seen all i wanted to at this time, and noone was getting along, and it was hot as we were having a severe heat wave, and thats when the union guy showed up and kicked me off the job.     So anyway, thats my experince, and would guess offshore oil riggers are just as bad as dredge men if not worse.Last edited by 123weld; 08-07-2015 at 02:39 AM.
