Just wondering how many are having success with using GTAW pulse instead of just doing small circles? I weld a lot of .065" wall 316 Stainless pipe by either cup walking or just small circles with a back purge and 35-50 amps.I've been experimenting with using pulse with OK success still need to work things out to be 100% every time I strike and arc. Usually using a Syncrowave 350LX (limited to 10pps) or a Maxstar 200 (300+ pulse capable)
Reply:Lots of looks but no replies....
Reply:Be patient rick haha, we have a lot of members on this board and a ton of guest, someone with sanitary pipe experience will chime in. I never welded san pipe but small circles seems to be the key.Millermatic 211Miller Syncrowave 350lx with cooler and tigrunner Thermal Dynamics cutmaster 811955 National Cylinder Gas O/A setup with original patina
Reply:@ Rick_H - limited experience in TIG'n sanitary grade SS from this end.  May find this primer from The Nickel Institute helpful:http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...63587204,d.dmQ.  Patience.  The experienced WW crew will aid you."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:I weld sanitary, but have not tried pulse on it. This actually has me curious. We are a bit slow at work, so if I get a few minutes, I'll setup a purge and try pulse to see how it does. I've always done either circles, or walking it if I have room.Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Reply:I use pulse for sanitary tube. Works really well. I never walk the cup or do small circles. Walking the cup for me adds way to much heat into the piece. Any questions just hit me up.
Reply:I guess I got a little impatient..lolI have good success on .065" wall 316L with little circles or just a steady pull with the following settings 38amps, 1/16 gas lens, #8 cup with 2% thor tungsten, pure argon purge. What prompted my question about pulse was I had the opportunity to visit a contractor who does a lot of high end sanitary work along with orbital work (which in the proper hands is the most perfect, consistent weld I have ever seen.) I saw some of their guys manual weld test pipes and they looked pulsed to me, which I have not tried up to this point.I know there are a lot of anti pulse people out there but I prefer to embrace the technology advancements. don't need pulse to do a good job. I use the pulse feature more and more as I have started to learn exactly what the settings do, it really can help with thin stuff when your way out of position, or on an edge.I did pulse tonight and had success but the inside was not as consistent as I would like, settings were 85 amps, 40% back, 10pps, 40% peak, 1/16 gas lens #8 cup, pure argon backpurge (Syncro350LX). I really need to grab the Maxstar and see if the inverter technology helps any...Last edited by Rick_H; 03-25-2014 at 11:59 PM.AWS 17.1, D1.1 and ASME IX (GTAW)Miller Syncrowave 350LX, Maxstar 150sth, Maxstar 200DX and  Millermatic 252 w/ Spoolmatic 30aMiller buzz box with Lincolin TombstoneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38

Reply:I never really use pluse just walk the cup whenever possible.  Freehand when I have to.
Reply:why can you not use a pedal? i do sanitary tube, never bother with pulse, even if i cant use the pedal. usually around 38amps, 2.4mm ceriated, 1.6mm filler. there is absolutely no need to follow the internet 'fashion' and walk on .065 wall tube in the real world.
