Help me my new welder

I put together the new lincoln 140c the other day and didn;t have time to fire it up. This morning I turned on the switch and the power came on but the thing wont spark,  switched the cables and checked the reset button and made sure it was on a level surface. Why won't this new mig welder start welding. Am i doing something wrong or is the unit no good. ThanksLast edited by mrbob; 09-22-2007 at 06:54 PM.

Reply:Yes im pulling the trigger and the wire is coming out, but no arc. I dont get it.
Reply:Check that the cables are connected tightly, I guess you went from solid to flux or vice versa, and make sure the ground clamp is making contact with metal not rust/paint.  Also, check that the tip isn't too large for the wire you are using, you shouldn't really see space around the wire in it. Finally the surface should be paint/rust free for the wire to arc/spark correctly where you want to weld.    I don't think anything except no ground connection or a bad unit would cause you to get no arc but what do I know, even when I mistakenly used the wrong tip I got intermitant arc/sparks.
Reply:Those machines normally use the arc volts to drive the wire feed motor.  There should be a positive and a negative stud under the side cover of the machine.  try releasing the wire drive roll tension and check for voltage between the two output studs while pressing the trigger.  If you get welding voltage, check the cables and gun as John96 suggested.  If there is no voltage while the trigger is pressed, there is a problem in the machine.Good luck,Bob
Reply:Thanks guys  for the input, well I fell stupid. Im learning , the problem was not a good connection, I used some new metal an bam it went to work, the other piece had some rust on it, but I thought I cleaned it good but now I know. Thank again.
