Hi there guys, new to the forum and had a couple of questions.  I was wondering what the difference is between the coveted sa 200's and the sae 300's( thats what I have). What is the extra "E" for in the title??  the code is in the low 5000's and it has a continental gas engine.  Any idea how to narrow down what year it is? It appears to have a faded red face, a round generator and the leads hook up under the doors. The previous owner painted it blue( I assure you that will be fixed!) I am pretty competent with engines but am the first to admit I no little about the generator side of things. It has sat for a couple of years and I finally have been motivated after visiting your site to get off my *** and restore it. thanks guys-J
Reply:Hey . . .  is it really you???  The one and only????   If so, good to see you back . . .
Reply:Welcome, pilebuck.Your 300 probably has an f226 "6" vs the 200's f163 "4". Same engine family.I don't know about "E". The electric motor/generator machines where SAE's. I'm guessing Shield Arc Electric.
Reply:I went to weldmart.com and saw that the sae 300 uses the same rheostat and exiter as the sa 200's which everybody seems to love, am just wondering if they have the same arc characteristics that the old guys like (ie is it worth putting money into or get a hold of a sa 200) basically the only difference i can see from a parts standpoint is a 6 cyl vs. 4. Any comments?? (Seattle Pilebuck)

Reply:So put a little money in it and I'll have something pretty decent?? Right on!  The last time I went to weld something at the house I couldnt get it to strike an arc, but It welded fine the time before that, and since then the battery has died. I didnt mess with it much, I switched to a Trailblazer 302 that I have for when the power goes out at the house. I was using junk leads, but at the time I thought I still should have been getting something? I know jack about brushes or the generator side of things. After I get a battery in it next weekend sounds like Im going to have to do some troubleshooting. I talked to an old school buddy of mine today who is doing pipeline work in Arizona and he kind of gave me the bug and got me motivated.  Id like to go through it and get it back to reliable and ready to take to work if the opportunity arrizes, and if I dont use it for work it still will be a fun project!!Any idea where to get replacement doors??-J.
Reply:I would be more inclined to call it a Shield-Arc Enhanced?  It uses a continuous current control unit and different series coils to replace the range switch used on the standard Shield-Arc (SA) machines.Bob

Reply:Look up JTMCC's website (First Rate Fabricators), should be a serial #/ year list there somewhere, find the year of manufacture.
Reply:I believe that "E"    was for "engine" ( SAE )  . motor driven models were designated  S A M ( M for motor driven ) . with the continuous current control , you have perfect control of the amperage , even better than that of a SA200 or SA250.The only drawbacks in a machine like the SA300 (in my opinion,)  is extra size and weight, and 6 cylinders burn more fuel than 4 cylinders , but, it's a great machine .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"

Reply:right on guys, I figured out that it is a 1963.  Look up Bills welder repair if you get a chance. The guy does some really nice looking overhauls of older welders. I know some of our machines at work have been converted to run CV, anybody know any decent books about welder repair/overhaul? If not I think  someone could make some money if they wrote one!!

Reply:Sorry guys , not Carl
Reply:Yeah, a bunch of us were discussing that elsewhere . . .  already come to that conclusion.  Well, nice to meet you anyhow
Reply:Originally Posted by denrepBob that sounds right, and makes more sense. After all an "E"ngine could be an "E" also.I remember looking in an old Lincoln manual, that showed different models. The electric motor model was an "E" and the belt driven model not. That's where I drew my conclusion from.
Reply:Originally Posted by denrepToday, I found that book and leafed through it a bit.It looks like the drive suffix is after the ampere rating.SAE 200 B = belted SAE 200 (Belt driven SAE 200) Lincoln called it "belted"SA  200 B =  belted SA 200  DC motor powered machines are also illustrated. Anyone ever seen one?
Reply:got her in the garage, most of the way torn down, taking lots of pictures.
Reply:by the way just started my tere down on my 1957 sae 300 every thing is easy so far just weather to go with original f-244 continentel or 2 choices a 4-236 perkins or a 250 ford I-6
Reply:cant beat a diesel for fuel economy, used to be a Cat mechanic so im a little biased towards the perkins My continental still seems to be in good shape so i cant justify the upgrade just yet, I think a new carb, air filter assembly, plugs & wires and Ill be good shape. Ordered a new rheostat and need to order some new brush assemblies. Going to town to get new wiring, battery box, and paint supplies and then go play in the garage!! Let me know what engine you end up going with, Im interested in how easy it is to convert over?

Reply:well so far its a simple task, but mind you I already have a full machine shop . the continentel uses the same basic base plate as the prekins , so far the only difference is bolt patterns and crank width so once i get that I will post it and what the starter dementions are , and if I can figure out the digital camra I will post what I have .

Reply:wow very cool thankyou ,thankyou ,thankyou . but back on mercedes the only prob with them is basic start up cost , I do agree they are a great engine , any way again thank you sir , and I say that rewspectfully I was nothing more than lance corporal ( USMC -semper fi )by the way the 5 cylinder mercedes would be perfect very smooth and strong
Reply:300 d?? you guys know anyone that has put a detroit diesel in??2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
Reply:i've always loved the Perkins in my SA-250. I re-iterate; in 11 hours of welding ,it burned 5 gallons of diesel fuel, an  sa-200  ( 8 hours )  with the 4 cylinder continental burned 12 gallons, doing same work. At the price of fuel now days , gas is pretty  high.[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:got her most of the way back together. I was actually surprised at how simple the insides of the generator portion are. Lincolns parts site/weldmart all actually pretty helpful.  Inspected everything, cleaned and or replaced brush holder assemblies, new rheostat, tune-up, fresh paint. Next weekend going to install the new gauges I bought (oil pressure, amps, and coolant temp). Im going to have to cut out some new holes in the face to install them.  I need a 2 1/16th hole saw but home depot only has the bimetal ones in 1/8th increments.  Also need to find a welding supply store open on the weekends(to busy during the week).  The through bolt insulators were brittle and broke when I took the lugs apart and I need replace em. What plugs and wires are used on Continental f226?? I thought I saw parts numbers listed somewhere on this site but I couldnt find it today.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302

Reply:have to agree the autolite plugs work very good on mags, and be sure to get copper core or metalic wires , carbon wires will fry out . napa carrys the wires you have to cut thenm to fit but if you solder the ends on you wont need another set for a long time .
