Hello, from Canada, Ontario! First off, what's better? getting an air compressor and tools to drill 90 degree holes or getting a drill press? What i want to do is drill holes that are 90 degrees in steel no more than 3/16ths thick... maybe more... well peeps, what are your ideas??
Reply:Drill press
Reply:Drill press, it's such a basic tool.Air tools waste lots of energy.unless you work in a shop with piped air everywhere,  and you're afraid of electric sparks
Reply:While I COULD live without a drill press, I don't know how I ever did.  You'll never regret a drill press, especially if you are primarily drilling 90-degree holes in material which is small enough to fit in the drill press. Now, with that said, I absolutely love having air tools in my shop.  I got a compressor as quickly as I could and never looked back.  But, I use a lot of air tools in my hobbies.  But, I'd get the drill press first, unless you have a specific need for a tool which is pneumatic which is pivotal to the work you do in your shop.  I use the drill press nearly every time I am in the shop.  If you work with wood at all, get yourself a decent set of Forstner bits.  You'll wonder what you ever did without them.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:if you're drilling a few holes, I'd buy a rechargeable hand drill(for versatility/portability). if you had a lot of drilling to do, I'd setup a drill press for it.can't go wrong with a drill press.
Reply:Easy answer..just buy both...................Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:Really both as mention. The drill press is a multi tool too. Besides drilling holes you can chuck in a buffer wheel, die grinder bit, and a flapper wheel. A super handy machine to have. I would look for one with the front, middle, and rear pulley system. You have numerous speed available and a slower speed for metal.Attachment 1188951
Reply:As mentioned Air Power only makes sense if you are doing ALOT of work with theses tools.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:Hand drilling sucks in my opinion. It needs to be done though so you do need both.Drill press is for hole making and nothing else in my opinion and mine do nothing else but as mentioned you can.
Reply:I have 3, drill press, air and cordless, all are used. The drill press is the most accurate, get a floor model would be my suggestion.Magazines have issues, everything else has problems
Reply:I have all three as well.  The air drills can sit in the drawer for a few years between uses.  The cordless gets used daily.  The drill press has been collecting dust since I got a mill.  It was used pretty much daily before that.My name's not Jim....
Reply:I also Vote Drill press, Air is nice but for most there are other options. At our shop the compressor is more like a water fountain(tank drain) with humidity in the 70% range so much.  We have cordless drills and 3 Drill press 2 bench top units and a real one that has power feed. The iron worker does most of our holes though.Last edited by Crash5291; 08-18-2015 at 12:15 AM.
Reply:I'd go for the drill press, I wouldn't be without mine. Air tools are alright, but unless you've got a big shop and you're using them all day they're not really worth it. At least in my opinion. I've got a few air tools I use for occasional jobs, needle scaler for removing chunks of rust, nail guns for trim and small woodworking, but other than that the compressor pretty much gets used to fill tires. I'm actually considering selling my 26 gal oil-less and just keeping my little pancake compressor for small jobs.Cordless tools have pretty much replaced all my air tools, even my impact wrench. My dad has the newest Ridgid 18v finish nailer that competes pretty nicely with my Hitachi pneumatic 16ga.
