I bought this real nice Cherry Picker two years ago DRMO from Uncle Sam used, $75 Worked great, it is big but not huge.  I overdid it and lifted too much and it stopped pumping.  A friend who knows these things volunteered to get it right.  He works out a Yuma Proving Ground and knows this stuff well.  He handed me three seals to get to do the rebuild.  I found one easily, one is Nylon and apparently could be reused... the third is a bewilderment  to both local Hydraulic shops?    So the ? is... could I mail it somewhere to a huge supplier and get a new one?  Anyone know of a big enough dealer who will porbably stock the seal.   Everyone who measures it has an opinion,  US, Metric, biggeror  smaller than any breadbox they've seen before etc ad nauseum... Absurd comment:  go to Harbor Freight and get  a new cylinder... (First they don't got it anyways and second this comment is assinine and I mention that and move on)   Last thing, nope the thing I won't ever do is  is throw away a nice big US made cylinder for some Chinese crap. Got any big good dealers in your addr book? thanks muchLincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:go to hf with a 20% off coupon and get a replacement cylinder if you cant find the seal. what sometimes happens is debris blocks open the ball bearing that serves as a relief valve.

Reply:That kind of looks like a U seal.at any rate.  This place will most likely have it and can probably help you figure out which one you need.http://www.herculesus.comMiller 250x & Lincoln V205-TSmith Oxy-Prop torch

Reply:Ok. Based on what I can see I'm assuming these go on the end of the ram plus the seal around the top of the ram. I'd say that the nylon one is the backup for the main cup seal which is the real tricky one to get (it always is on jacks). I'm guessing that the end of the ram is turned into two steps. One for the nylon backup and a smaller one for the seal. At that point the seal can be retained one of several ways including bolt and washer, or simply a small shoulder on the end of the ram that it slips over. Based on the caliper readings I'm guessing the bore of the ram is 1 1/8". The shoulder that the seal goes onto is another matter. It's nearly impossible to get measurements from the seals themselves when doing jobs like these. It's my experience that you need good measurements of the surfaces the seals fit on/in. That surface might be 5/8" from the caliper reading or it could be some odd ball measurement (some companies are real good at the odd ball make you come back to them stuff).   Get me the measurements of the groove including height and diameter as well as a good measurement of the bore and I can see what I can find. You might end up needing to do some small modifications to the groove size if it's odd ball enough (if memory serves me right you've got someone out there close with a lathe). Or we might need to have a custom seal made. It's not dirt cheap but the company I use for seals doesn't charge a sky high minimum like most out there. I found them rather reasonable for the one I had made a while back.  You might also try calling the company mentioned above. They seem to handle a lot of jack type stuff including Blackhawk which is a common military supplier of this type of thing.   Just be sure to let me know if I can help in any way. To bad I'm not closer or I would fix it for you for free.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:I f you can pick the cylinder to you local Cylinder Services shop they should be able to get you the proper seals as well as tell you how to install them.I use Rochester Cylinder Services in Rochester NYhttp://www.cylinderservices.net/I have had them rebuild several DMRO equipment cylinders as well as rebuild cylinders on old farm & heavy equipment.    These guys are VERY good and prices are cheap. If you know the name of the cylinder it would help otherwise very good measurements & pics would help.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:http://www.harborfreight.com/3-ton-h...ack-36396.html   since they dont got it,i guess i should return the one i bought. $44 plus tax when you use the coupon. as i noted above, this was if you cant find the seal you need. apparently, some people would rather rant and vent when they dont know what they're talking about.
Reply:My neighbor works out at YPG and is experienced at these things... He has it apart and has given me the seals to go find.  I will work on getting some shaft measurements which makes good sense... the metal will be more accurate than this rubber seal.   Local Hydraulic shop was not helpful... maybe no $ in it for them?  The neighbor has some time  now to go at trying to find the seal too.. We had the County Fair this week andf he has two daughters 4 H showing and selling etc... poor guy, we're talking stress here  I appreciate all the help and soon I'll find the part online or  with help from Irish etc...   I use this thing a lot I couldn't even remove the rottiller from the tractor etc without it. .  I could always drive over  to Texas... Good excuse, get her done and enjoy the trip  Hmm road trip now that sounds like fun with tornado season coming upYes, Mark does have a nice lathe and he is generous with it...so there is some brais and help too. Thanks guys.Last edited by PapaLion; 04-01-2011 at 07:37 AM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:Thanks for the ?  Irish, my neighbor left the entire package bagged for me to finish... and no? seal yet for the one I can't find.   Hmmm well I've been busy building that guitar for the contest so I just let it lay.  I'm done with that except for the video which will be soon and doesn't take all my time anyway so..  this thing is on my mind.  What do U suggest?  I will follow your adivice here.  Should I mail the seal I can't seem to locate to some large company and hope they can match it?Then I'd clean it all and put it back together I suppose.  Wish I'd been there to see it taken apart.  Well, his horse arena may not get  disced, rototilled and leveled for awhile, I might be busy learning hydraulic cylinder repairIF U promise no Tornadoes... I might even bring the thing over for competent assy in Texas... at least I'd think about it right up to the gas station, $3.85 here.Last edited by PapaLion; 04-24-2011 at 02:53 PM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
Reply:I think we can get by on some measurements from the shaft and bore as well as a pic of the shaft might help. From there I've got a couple of ways to go. You can also go take a look at the web site of company I get most of my seals from. http://www.herchyd.com/  They have a pretty large selection. I don't see the engineering catalog online at the moment but I have a copy here. I do have a resellers discount with them so I can get the parts cheaper than listed.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:http://www.mcmaster.com/#mechanical-seals/=c146ikLooks like a 5/8-11/8 U cup seal. The differences from your seal could be attributed to swelling and stretching over the years. Might be worth the $5 just to try it out

Reply:I dealt with dead hydraulics on my cherry pickers by replacing them with a strut in one case and a hunk of pipe slid over the old cylinder shaft in the other.Added a couple of plates on the end and a through-bolt holds an iron pulley so I can reach DOWN into truck engine bays etc. No need to move the top tube.Even if you fix or replace the cylinder, have a strut or hunk of pipe handy, and do the "pulley mod" which doesn't interfere with normal chain use. It expands what you can do.  A strut will keep it working while you are on a seal hunt.I can afford new cylinders, but after doing it this way I can't be bothered to install them.(F-150 in pic was totalled for kinked frame It was convenient to cut it in half and slide the halves out. Back half made a trailer/spare bed toting device, front half kept the drivetrain organized until I put it on another frame.)The really nice F-15 gun cranes which inspired me have Winsmith speed reducers with a hand crank, pulley, and ratchet added. If you have similar ingredients around you can make a NICE, VERY LOW EFFORT winch.  An Acme-thread manual screw jack would be a great replacement for a hydraulic cylinder, but I don't have one of those either. The F-16 engine install trailer (for example) uses Nook Industries jacks with 1/2" adapters so you can use a speedhandle.  Older trailers are sometimes surplused, and have many useful parts.Comealong is a Wyeth-Scott. Love 'em. Even better with a chain grab hook added. Old Hein picker has been like this for twenty years, and done many engines. Non-steering wheels are no problem (sideways adjustments are easily done with a hunk of pipe or a wood fence post), and the space-saver spares still work if they go flat. Front wheels are lawn tractor solids. It's done 460 Fords and International 392s in my sandy yard. Attached ImagesLast edited by farmall; 04-26-2011 at 03:04 PM.
Reply:As I stated in the PM's a measurement of the ID of the inner cylinder, the OD of the smallest groove of the shaft, and the length of that groove would give us all we need to know to get a seal for it.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Got a little farther today. The smaller groove in the shaft, nearer he end is 11/16" in diameter. The next cut is 7/8"  in diameter and then the saft is 1 1/8".  I have not got the inside diameter of the inner tube yet.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more toolsOriginally Posted by PapaLionGot a little farther today. Reply:Ok, got the inner tube I.D. measured today.  It is 1.192" which is pretty darn close to 1 3/16" which would make it 1/16" larger than the shaft O.D.   Hope that helps.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:I need them by Christmas for sure  No hurry at all... Ground will be fine.  I'll get a measurement on the thickness of the seal and do a  wiggle test of the shaft in the inner tube... we're getting closer. I got a  VISA handy if u want me to call and pay for the order U arrange?  "Customer pressure"  Oh that is where the service tech (U) put a large boot in a hi presure point of the rear of the customer for being so impatient and whiney right?   Not the cowboy way to be a whiner. thanks much, Bretps: U were figuring to fly out and assemble it correctly, right?   Ok, drive out will be ok tooLast edited by PapaLion; 04-28-2011 at 11:30 PM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:Here are some closer hopefully better pics of the seal I can't find a replacement for. The size of the shaft cut for the narrowest  groove is 9/32" .  Larger  than I expected?  The size for the diameter of that groove is 11/16"The shaft is wobbily in the inner tube.  The seal might? be able to be forced over the end and down into the groove where it sits? I've messed with it a bit and it is tight. If we get  a company willing to  make one, then if you gave them the specs and I gave them the order info VISA and addr etc via phone .. that might work? I'm gone to meds again Wed/Thursday. Those nurses adore me I suppose what else could it be?  Attached ImagesLincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
Reply:Looks like the 1/4" high seal will work. The grooves are always wider than the seals which are actually a nominal size (one of the reasons it's hard to measure the seals directly). If you'll PM me your address I can get one coming easily enough. You could order it directly as well though at about 4 times the price I pay. But as it is the shipping is going to be more than the seal either way.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
