Hello everyone.  My wifes job has relocated us and Im  job hunting.  I have a lot of experience with high amperage short circuit MIG.  Yesterday I did a weld test for what seemed like a very good company the problem was it was with something I was unfamiliar with: spray transfer.  Long story short I set my machine hot around at 30 v and set the wire until i heard it humm and I got the job and passed the bend test.  But I know nothing about how to set my machine For spray I have no idea how I did it.  Can you guys with experience with spray chime in and help me.  Do you guys have some starting point volts and IPM for 1/2, 3/8, 1/4, 3/16 thickness of steel and some pointers on how to tell when im at the sweet spot because im clueless..  Thanks so much I appreciate any help because I have a family to feed.
Reply:A year or two ago there was a good thread going in the Mig, Tig, Stick, and Oxy/Fuel Welding section on spray transfer. I had never done it before, members here talked me through it. Reply:Using .045 wire, 26.5 volts, and about 300 IPM on the wire is a good starting point, when using 95-5 AR/CO2 gas. This will work well on 1/2" to 1" thick material, give or take on the WFS and volts.I wouldn't recommend spray transfer on 3/16" - 1/4" thick material....pulsed arc or short arc would work better.RichLast edited by steelsurgeon; 08-25-2015 at 02:01 PM.
Reply:@ Lunchbox148 - good information of axial spray transfer found in the Lincoln Electric - GMAW Product/Procedure Notes.  For baseline settings, checkout the Miller app for a smart phone or Miller - MIG Solid Wire Calculator."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Ditto downloading the miller app on your phone. It will get you pretty close.
Reply:Iv'e been welding for 25yrs, and still to this day I will put some scrap together and play with the knobs as I'm welding. The charts are usually way off. If anybody chimes in and says that is not good for the machine, I would seriously beg to differ. I haven't hurt one yet. I do it with my own personal machines. The best way to know it is to actually feel it, and not just be in the ball park.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Agree with that. If you know what wire it is, you can look up the wire and see the recommended parameters for a starting point but there's nothing wrong with setting the machine on a piece of scrap. I've found most times you go into a new job, there will someone with experience that will help you get the machine set up right. Then once you get a little more confident you can play around with some. The one time I had a problem was when a shop foreman was telling me to turn the voltage way up on metal-core that I had never used. He let me come in to try it out before taking a job test but totally screwed me up. I talked to a welder test and training center and got the basic settings and it ran good. The machine was already set pretty close to this. Then this foreman comes over and say's to turn the voltage up about 5 volts and it will burn in. I kept getting porosity for no apparent reason and left very frustrated and didn't go back to try the test the next day. That foreman really &^%$$#@! me up.Last edited by Welder Dave; 08-26-2015 at 01:43 AM.
