I'm graduating welding school at the end of this month and I went and looked for a job and I got a weld test and passed it. When they talked to me they asked if I would be willing to be a plumber to for them And I said yes. So I'll be doing plumbing school for 4 years and working for them so I can get be a journeymen plumber... So was that a good choice? To be a plumber and a welder?
Reply:The more skill sets you have, the more employable you are. Are they paying for the plumbing school?
Reply:I pay out of pocket then they renburse me the money I paid after the 4 years

Reply:They don't want you to quit with that kind of money layout. Would be a chunk of change after 4 years.  John Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
Reply:It's only costing me a couple hundred bucks. That's it.
Reply:GREAT ! You need to sell yourself today. The more you can do successfully the more secure employment will be. Oh, if you do service work, do not chew your fingernails.
Reply:will you be working for them in that 4 years getting paid? If so I would do it. Like others said, you can never have too many skills… THe only problem with that is everyone will call you when they need something fixed!- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com

Reply:I'm a welder for a plumbing/mechanical company.  I don't have a plumbing license but there's nothing plumbing wise I cannot do.  I'd rather weld/fit pipe.  But the more practical skills you have, the more valuable you will be as an asset to a company.  I work for a small company that subs out to a larger one so there are pros and cons.  When I'm not welding/doing welding related things my pay gets cut down so I try to only go out on our mechanical jobs... My fault for not negotiating better...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:There are dozens of trades that need someone who also welds.  This avenue will make you highly prized.  They need millwrights who can weld, machinists who can weld, plumbers and pipe fitters who can weld, refrigeration mechanics who can weld, Ironworkers who can weld.  On and on it goes.  Wearing two hats makes you a permanent employee.  Four years from now a foreman will be talking to himself and saying " I have to lay off those guys but I can keep Rockcrawler because I can put him welding for a few weeks then I can switch him back and forth on future jobs."

Reply:Make sure that if you plan to become a journeyman, that the union will take you and what you will be when you get in. Around here, you join the Union 1st, then they send you out. I don't know many that work for a company, then become Union unless someone there has a lot of pull. The Union might take you in after working for 4 years, but chances are high you'll come in as an apprentice. We had some guys in from one of the unions a while back recruiting in the schools night program. Pretty much they said, no matter how much experience you walk in with, chances are at best you'd be a 2nd/3rd year apprentice. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but you need to come in with a ton of years of work experience and really know your $hit for them to take you as a Journeyman. 4 years working isn't going to cut it.I see this as a typical job recruitment tactic. They want you to join them vs becoming an apprentice directly. In 4 years when you find that they weren't quite on the up and up ( you "misunderstood" what they told you...) you may have a tougher time joining the union and still start at the bottom of the ladder. Don't trust the business, talk to the Union yourself and see what they say. If it's on the up and up, you'll start as an apprentice even when working for the company and be in the Union from day 1 pretty much. If not, chances are they are trying to run a fast one by you knowing you are young and eager ( and don't know any better)..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
