SA-200 engine conversion question...

Hi Everyone,I have a 1955 shorthood with a F-162 engine that is locked up.  I also have a mid 70s SA-200 with a good F-163 engine.  It was damaged in a roll over and I would like to use the engine to power the the old short hood.  Has anybody out there done this and if so are there any special adaptations required other than bolting stuff together.  I have lathes and a Bridgeport mill so making adapters is no big deal other than a lot of extra work.  I would be interested in hearing from anybody out there that has done this and get a heads up on what to expect, should I decide to tackle the job.DaveDave B.E-MAIL:  [email protected] PAGES:  www.wfmservice.comwww.rides4rides.comwww.pvpmedia.com/53f100.htmDad always said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."I say, We can make it better.
Reply:You need to see a good repair shop and ask these questions.  There is more to what you want to do than meet the eye.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Hi John,I am the repair shop.  I have rebuilt quite a few SA-200s.  I have not done this particular egnine swap.  I also have a nice machine shop.  If anything to adapt it can be made I can make it.  I simply wanted to know if anyone has done this swap.  It always helps to talk to sopmeone that has done it.  If you go to most repair shops they will tell you they don't do anything that isn't stock as it was.  They don't know how.  This is because they are basically parts changers.  It's far more likely to come across someone here that has done this as opposed to a repair shop. Reply:DGB - Externally the f162 and f163 base engines are virtually twins. You'll have a bolt in swap.Wow DGB you do beautiful work. You should consider posting your pics in an sa200 restoration thread.Then I'll post the other extreme; How to cut a window to access the flywheel  bolts and repower one in three hours!Last edited by denrep; 11-11-2007 at 07:24 PM.
Reply:been there done that , but watch out when you get it loose the fly wheel is almost as heavy as the engine  my fingers found that out the hard way,
Reply:I HAVE done the engine swap. My sa 200 (shorthood) didnt have a starter from the factory.(hand cranker). i kept the same engine and found an adaptor plate from a 1950 machine. the plate didnt bolt up...had to drill the plate to fit the armiture..had to grind out a place on the armiture to adapt the starter to. quite an ordeal. but it looks and welds great. spent alot of money restoring this machine.i know where to find all the hard to find parts. Reply:mine has a straight six chevrolet engine they used a love joy type coupler to connect the motor to the generator
Reply:If my f-163 $hits the bed(which I highly doubt), I will take the 200 Ford off my non welding, no parts to be had, POS, boat anchor Hobart and make it work.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:GR-303, runs great, I can get a spark 3 out of 10 times. Cant jump it leads to leads, hmmmmmm something aint right.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:hey  i did a 54 short hood  to a 64 red face holler i can help ya outbut the motor should swap should not be any adp. but the mount will have to be the same either use all the of 70  modle or all 3 of otherthanks mac [email protected]
