can i use a 4.5 inch grinder in the 115 volt dc outlet on my sa 200 or will it mess it up? if i cant is there anything i can do to make it put out 115 volts AC.? does anyone make a 115 volt dc grinder i searched google and found nothing
Reply:You might be able to, most tools use Universal motors, which can be run on DC or AC. If its a cheap grinder then I say what the heck, give it a try.
Reply:As long as it has brushes it should work.  Some new fangled governed ones do not.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Scubaholic, Glad to hear you got the beast going! Most motors with brushes are okay. Plain old incandescent lights are okay. Some newer electronic controls are not okay. Nothing with a transformer will work.
Reply:Most tools in a weldors arsenal are fine off an SA-200, read the tag to make sure it doesn't say AC only.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Most variable speed tools will NOT work. Most single speed tools will work.
Reply:as in will not work, will burn the tool up or just wont work?
Reply:It will fry the trigger on a variable speed drill.
Reply:I discussed this at some length with the local power tool repairman a few years back. This is what he told me: if the switch goes click it will work on dc, if it doesn't the switch will burn out in short order. If it is a variable speed tool it must be made for dc.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:I know dewalt, makita and milwaukee make ac/dc grinders and such. I have both dewalt and makita grinders currently and also have a milwaukee  bandsaw. ~is ac and - is dc. however, i did have a makit 4.5 grinder that was ac only with a clicky switch that got fried by being used on a sa200. it was a brushed motor, too. make sure it says ac/dc!http://www.makita.com/menu.php?pg=product_det&tag=9005Bhttp://www.dewalt.com/us/products/to...roductID=10649http://www.milwaukeeconnect.com/weba..._192206_192137these are a few of the tools i'm referring to.Last edited by banshee35; 02-02-2008 at 08:29 PM.Reason: grinder link

Reply:If it has brushes and just an off-on switch it will work. Having said that I've run into a problem with that on two tools. One was the first Makita 4 1/2' grinder ny dealer received and I bought. The switch was rated barely above the amperage the tool pulled on AC. Fried the switch, Makita fixed it, promptly fried it again. I found a switch rated for twice the AC amperage it pulled and replaced it. No more problem and the grinder lasted over twenty years. The other was a Victaulic groover and was the same thing. Replaced with a larger amperage rated switch and no more problems.
