I have read about people quickly blinding themselves, even thorough their closed eyelids, while arc welding. But on the otherhand there is apparently this entire school "Barefoot College" that trains poor people in third world countries to weld, among other things. And they don't ever have them wear any welding light protection, at all.I am struggling to understand how these students would not make themselves permanently blind before they developed even rudimentary welding skills.
Reply:Something is not right here..........zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:It keeps the welding school in business training the new replacements for the ones prematurely blinded. They also run another school for the blind to teach them new life skills.

Reply:Here is an interesting quote on my FB newsfeed on the subject.there's a world of mystery out there. This photo is not photoshopped I can guarantee you that, I visit this woman at least once a year, she builds parabolic solar cookers with 6 other women who wear the same amount of gear as her and in the last 10 years have had no accidents. Maybe it's cuz they're women, and they're more patient and careful

Reply:as long as there is enough polution in the air, welding light is refracted and only the puddle remains . . . . . . . .here in visalia, with all the smog from l.a. i often weld without face protection and am perfectly fine. i also rarely run shielding gas as there is enough co2 sunk in this valley that the weld pool remains quite neutral without porosity. code welds are made down in bakersfield daily without gas or flux!i imagine similar conditions in 3rd world countriesbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:Google images that show up with this topic, it does show in some pics that they have a hood on or dark goggles. All the pics also show them with safety glasses on which I am guessing blocks out the UV light to there eyes. It is also hard to tell but it does look like their eyes are closed if there is an arc lit and only safety glasses on. Not really the best PPE but I guess they make do.
Reply:Whenever I see these type of safety posts that come out of left field, the needle on my trollometer moves up to 56% chance of being trolled. When I look and the OP has less than 5 posts to their name my trollometer jumps to 99.999% chance of being trolled. That being said, I'll bite, I don't think it is possible to weld with out some type of eye protection because the arc is just too bright to see what you're welding. My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x
Reply:A person would have their eyes permanently damaged if not go completely blind within less than a minute of watching stick, MIG or TIG arcs without eye protection. This is not a subject for argument, either. You might be able to braze or gas weld without eye protection, but that would be very foolish. Me thinks we have been roundly trolled. Reply:There's a fellow Harvey Lacey on one of these welding boards (Miller?) who goes by the handle of "wroughtnharv". He's done a lot of work helping out in Haiti. I believe one of his projects is to get locals to make their own welding helmets and he supplied a whole bunch of lenses he got via a donation."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder |
