Need tips for D1.1 1G cert!

Trying for my first weld cert and picked D1.1 1G on 1 inch plate. I'm looking for any tips that y'all could throw at me. -Nick
Reply:Keep it clean, keep your welds flat, no wagon tracks. I generally put the hot pass right on top of the root pass, then I have room to move. On tests I run all stringers. Take a small chisel, hammer, awl, chipping hammer, and wire brush with you. Reply:I'm sure I have, but can't remember ever taking a 1-G test. Here for our state structural test it is just 3, and 4-G. Never was allowed to use a grinder. Wire wheel on a grinder yes. Chip all the slag off with the chipping hammer. Run the chisel, and awl down the toes of each pass, then wire wheel again. Reply:We're allowed to use a grinder on this test for some reason but i'm not going to complain about it.
Reply:Test booths tend to have poor lighting so the flashlight is a must have. I the test with a backer bar or open root?

Reply:CEP and TSS all the D1.1 tests i have ever done allow a grinder but the D1.5 tests I have done are no power tools.
Reply:I've heard both ways on both tests so I'm guessing it depends on the supervisor.
Reply:I'll tell you this TSS. Make sure you have good tacks on the backer bar so they don't crack. Allow the plate to cool a bit between passes. I do not mean quench the plate but let it cool. Running to much fill will cause the plate to warp and can show in the root pass.
