I'm new to a spool gun and learned this week using 4043.. Yesterday I picked up a spool of 5356 by accident but I decided to give it a shot..... Well it's not even close to the same in welding charcistists. Is there something I should know? It's harder to get it to flow and a lot of soot.. I'm going to get some 4043 Monday. Reply:The soot is normal for 5356.  Just wipe it off afterwords.   I'm not a  expert on alloys but match alloy to filler.  6000 series works better with 5356 from my understanding.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:It has a lot of spatter also is that normal? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
Reply:If you're getting a lot of spatter you need to up your voltage as you're not working in spray mode.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Most people will say 5356, I prefer 4043 for a spool gun.  When I was learning I was told to use the 5356 if I was trying to push it through a liner, which was never very successful.  I'm sure 5356 is better for some alloy's.
Reply:There are some issues with welding aluminum where, if it is going to be anodized afterwards, the 5356 is required over 4043 in order to provide for a correct color match. Sometimes it may be suggested that 4043 is preferred for other instances where cracking is an issue, the problem with addressing it by an alloy change is that 4043 is "softer" (less tensile strength) than 5356 and thus may not be the correct manner to address the issue. 4043 definitely welds "cleaner" than 5356 however, as one of the other posters mentioned, it is simply due to smut which can be cleaned afterwards if that is a concern. As Zapster mentioned, the spatter is a machine setting issue and likely due to under-voltage settings. The 5356 is a "stiffer" wire and thus generally feeds better than the 4043. Good luck on your experimentation/applications and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I'm sticking with the 4043.. I couldn't get a good setting at all for the 5356..Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk

Reply:Fortunately this job didn't require 5356. Welding is not how I make my living.. Anything I build is for myself but if I need to figure it out I will. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
