Well this whole welding thing that started with a $90 Linde AC stick machine and progressed into 3 welding machines, 2 O/A setups, a drill press, 4 vises, 2 welding tables, 8 grinders, 3 hoods, dozens of clamps and pairs of gloves, about 3,000 pounds of assorted steel, chop saw, 2 years of welding classes etc etc has now progressed further and now I must have a garage. I can't keep dragging stuff outside to weld, besides it's cold right now. So after doing without a garage for 30 years or so leaving the vehicles outside I now need one for welding. Might as well make it big enough for the trucks too, 2 1 tons. I'll need a 20x10 door while I'm at it. Tomorrow my architect friend is coming over to measure. The tree cutters will be here later in the week, the big tree must goLet this be a warning to all you newbies who show up here thinking you are just going to buy just this one machine and it will be all you will ever need! Reply:The plans will be drawn by my buddy who is an architect. I am limited in size by my lot size but I am planning on about 40 feet wide by 25 feet deep. I wanted more depth but it won't fit my corner lot, which is wide but not too deep.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Consider allowing for a crane in the future.  Slightly larger footings and thicker floor sections in key areas would allow you to install a framework bolted to the floor at those key locations.   Another thing to consider is to install some imbed plates in the floor so that you can tack weld to the floor.  In larger shops they often use railway rail turned upside down with rebar welded to it extending down into the concrete.  Even four pieces of rail about a foot long set flush in the floor will be helpful.  Make the floor somewhere around a foot thick in those areas.  Concrete is cheap really.   Also pay a bit more for high strength mix.
Reply:bigb,If you need drawings stamped by a PE, I'd be willing to do it for the license cost in AZ.  Here in the bluegrass, it's $175, to give you some idea.  You'll also need to run a RESCheck report for some new federal laws.  I have a client building a 25' x 38' garage on a commercial property and even though it's not connected or heated, it must be insulated to the new spec.  Ridiculous.  Hopefully you can get all the permits and stuff done cheap.  After that, it's smooth sailing.

Reply:Originally Posted by bigbI'll have to look into that, I actually have some train rail. Thanks for reminding me about the high strength concrete, I definately want to do that. I have 20,000 lbs worth of trucks.
Reply:Originally Posted by bigbThanks for the offer but I am pretty well covered. Between my buddy drawing and submitting plans and my familiarity with the process and the people at the planning dept. I am not expecting problems. This will be the second building plan for me on this property, the first one went very smooth. Also, with the construction slowdown, our planning dept is bending over backwards to get plans approved.
Reply:How many of you stick weld in unfinished frame buildings, that is no drywall, just wood studs? I am not planning to drywall, but I got to thinking it might be good to drywall the welding area for fire protection?Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:Drywall has advantages.  Fire Resistant, there will be fewer nooks and crannies for hot things to hide and announce thier presence .  Temp Control, the drywall will provide a little insulation; it will also reduce drafts.  Improved lighting, paint with semi-gloss for ease of cleaning ( just brush it with a duster)and increased reflectivity.  Dust control.  Noise control, it wont help a lot, but I am confident it will help keep some of the noise from traveling through the walls.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:Interesting. I'm not used to them balloon framing a garage. Looks like it's all 2x6 construction too. What size is the door, 10' high x 18' wide? How tall are the walls, 15'?.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Insulate your walls and use drywall painted white or light color.  The insulation will keep you cooler, (or warmer when it's cold), the drywall is fire resistant and provides a good paintable surface.  The white or light color paint will make it brighter with less lights.  OSB and chipboard don't reflect near as much light.I used my shop about two years with open studs before I did the above.  The difference is amazing as to how much better lit the shop is.If you are really worried about damage to drywall (it is easy to fix) then apply it over OSB or particleboard, best features of both materials.I know one guy who put sheet metal on his walls (vertical ribs).  It did a nice job and was fast to do but the tin cost a lot more than drywall and paint.Looks like it will be a great shop, if you can, put in a steel I beam overhead for lifting heavy objects, or build a mobile gantry crane you can roll around the shop.Keep us posted."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
