I've been looking around for a good cheaper plasma cutter. I have used a Hypertherm 45 as well as a Lincoln before, but my price range is a little lower than those right now. However, I came across an older Hypertherm 380 for $350. It is in good working condition, but I'm not sure if this is a good deal or not? I'm nervous because it is a pawn shop special so either they know something I don't or they have no clue what they have.
Reply:If the system appears to be in good shape and it works...then it is a good deal. The 380 will run on either 120 or 240 volts (works better on 240) and was built by Miller to Hypertherm specs. The torch is a Hypertherm built torch. This unit is best suited for materials from gauge to about 3/16"....yet will cut 3/8" and 1/4" well, although at relatively slow speeds.Jim Colt   Hypertherm
Reply:So for what I'm wanting to do (off-road parts/trailing arms) which are typically up to 1/4" Chromoly it would work, but slowly? Would I be better off with this machine as opposed to say some of the Chinese specials? I have heard decent reviews on some of them, but am still slightly skeptical about the cheapos.
Reply:Ask if the customer service of the imports is any where equal to Hypertherm?I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. You may pick two.Hobart AC/DC StikMate LXHarbor Freight AD HoodHarbor Freight Industrial Chop SawDeVilbis 20 Gallon, 5 HP Compressor
Reply:I have a powermax 380 and it cuts 1/4 just fine, even on 110v.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:The Powermax380 produces about 27 amps....as far as comparison (power wise) to the imports it cuts as thick an as fast as most of the 40 amp units. If you compare its reliability, long term parts availability, and long term (factory) customer support....then there is no comparison with the low cost imports. The Powermax380 (once again...this unit was built by Miller for Hypertherm) is no longer produced as it was replaced by the Powermax30 (Hypertherm designed and built). There are thousands of 380's in use in the field....and they have proven to be a very reliable system...and will be supported by Hypertherm for many years to come.Jim Colt  Hypertherm
Reply:Thanks for the input guys I'll have to go back and see if I can talk them down any on it.Matt
Reply:Someone will snatch it up quickly if it is $350. Those units in good operating condition typically sell for $500 to $750. They are pretty popular.Jim Colt   Hypertherm
